Древнегреческая поэтесса
Время почти стерло её профиль с античных монет, но слова любви звучат так страстно, словно сорвались с горячих губ лишь вчера…
Я любила, я многих в отчаянии
призывала на свое одинокое ложе,
Я говорила языком истинной страсти…
До неё никто из поэтесс не смел говорить о своих чувствах так открыто и с такой невиданной силой. Если Гомер считается отцом эпической поэзии, то Сапфо создала лирику.
«Страстная Сапфо», как называли ее современники. Она родилась на острове Лесбос, в городе Эросе, за 612 лет до Рождества Христова. Как и другие девушки острова Лесбос, она получила по-мужски суровое и разностороннее воспитание. Дочерна загорелая, она занималась гимнастикой, участвовала в конкурсах красоты, а в школе гетер обучалась музыке и поэзии. Стихосложением она увлеклась еще в юности: писала оды, гимны, элегии, праздничные и застольные песни.
Когда на острове начались волнения и жители Лесбоса попытались свергнуть жестокого тирана Питтака, Сапфо и ее братьям пришлось искать убежища в дальних краях.
Сапфо вернулась на родной остров уже зрелой женщиной и прославленной поэтессой.
По тогдашним канонам красоты, которые задавались изнеженными белокожими афинянками, Сапфо не была красавицей: небольшого роста, очень смуглая, с живыми блестящими глазами. Овидий вкладывал в ее уста такие слова: «Я невелика ростом, но своим именем могу наполнить все страны».
Вскоре после возвращения между Сапфо и ее соратником по изгнанию, совсем еще юным поэтом Алкеем, вспыхнула любовь, которой суждено было остаться платонической. Яркая личность поэтессы одновременно и привлекала, и отпугивала Алкея. Он считал себя недостойным любви великой Сапфо и долго не осмеливался признаться ей в своем чувстве:
– Сказал бы, но стыжусь.
– Когда бы то, что высказать ты хочешь,
прилично было, стыд навряд смутил тебя.
Роман с Алкеем угас. А братья Сапфо подобрали ей мужа – богатого купца. Спустя год у них родилась дочь.
Но безжалостная судьба недолго позволила Сапфо наслаждаться семейным счастьем. Вскоре муж, а за ним и ненаглядная дочь спустились в мрачное царство Аида.
Лишенная семьи, Сапфо всецело отдалась творчеству. Своим поэтическим даром она прославилась на всю Элладу.
Она возглавила школу риторики, которую назвала Домом муз. Это был своеобразный античный богемный салон, где дочери знатных семейств собирались, чтобы сочинять и декламировать стихи, а заодно и находить удовольствие в обществе друг друга, предоставив мужчинам творить античную историю. Здесь устраивались пиры, рекой лилось вино, и нежные руки тянулись навстречу нежным рукам.
…Что касается меня, я буду отдаваться сладострастью,
пока смогу видеть блеск лучезарного светила
и восторгаться всем, что красиво!»
А что может быть прекраснее женщины?
В культуре Древней Греции однополая любовь была довольно частым явлением. Современники Сапфо не видели в этом ничего предосудительного: поэтесса пользовалась уважением Алкея, Солона, затем Платона и других выдающихся людей древности; Сократ величал ее своей наставницей в вопросах любви, а изображения знаменитой поэтессы помещались на монетах.
Произведения Сапфо пронизаны любовной страстью и восхищением, радостью нежного общения и ревностью.
Сапфо любила так, как дано любить немногим, без остатка отдавая себя страшной стихийной силе, с которой невозможно бороться:
Язык мой немеет, в крови моей пышут
Бегущими искрами струйки огня,
В глазах лишь потемки, и уши не слышат,
Немолчным прибоем звеня…
Но молодость и свежесть неумолимо уходили от нее. Любовные неудачи ранили сердце. Однажды брат поэтессы за огромные деньги выкупил из рабства прекрасную гетеру Родопу. Она была так красива, что Сапфо тоже воспылала к ней страстью и стала соперницей собственному брату. Но юная красавица осталась равнодушной к чувствам Сапфо, а брат увез ее с Лесбоса.
За свою последнюю любовь Сапфо заплатила самую высокую цену. По преданию, она влюбилась в молодого красавца-грека Фаона. А он остался холоден к страсти уже немолодой и некрасивой Сапфо, забывшей ради него всех своих подруг.
И пусть меня бесчестят за то,
что я бросила свое сердце в бездну наслаждений,
но, по крайней мере, я узнала божественные тайны жизни!
Мои глаза, ослепленные блестящим светом,
видели зарождающуюся зарю божественной любви!
Сапфо поднялась на вершину Левкадской скалы и бросилась в море.
Она была слишком сильной, слишком талантливой и самодостаточной, чтобы найти счастье в мире, где безраздельно властвовали мужчины. Только в ХХ в. общество оказалось готовым воспринять независимую и одаренную женщину, свободную и в любви, и в творчестве.
