I. Перепишите следующие предложения. Определите по грамматическим признакам, какой частью речи являются слова, оформленные окончанием - s, и какую функцию это окончание выполняет, т.е. служит ли оно:

а) показателем 3-го лица единственного числа глагола в Present Indefinite;

б) признаком множественного числа имени существительного;

в) показателем притяжательного падежа имени существительного.

Переведите предложения на русский язык. (см Образец выполнения 1)

1.The period of study in junior schools lasts four years till the pupils are eleven.

2. Almost all English pupils study Dickens’ and Shakespeare’s works at the English Literature lessons.

3. Pupils study a lot of subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography and Music.

II. Задайте все основные типы вопросов к следующему предложению.

III. Перепишите следующие предложения, содержащие разные степени сравнения, определите степень сравнения, и переведите предложение на русский язык.

IV. Перепишите и письменно переведите предложения на русский язык. обращая внимание на перевод местоимений much, many, little, few, a little. a few.

2. She gave him a little water to wash his hands and face.

3. I can’t buy this expensive hat today: I have too little money.

V. Перепишите следующие предложения, определите в них видо-временные формы глаголов и укажите их инфинитив; переведите предложения на русский язык (см Образец выполнения 2).

1. Compulsory education in Great Britain begins at the age of five years.

2. When my grandmother was young she lived in St.-Petersburg.

3. Our friends will go to the Black Sea coast next summer.

VI. Прочитайте и устно переведите на русский язык с 1-го по 5-й абзацы текста. Перепишите и письменно переведите их.

EDUCATION IN GREAT BRITAIN

1. Compulsory education in Great Britain begins at the age of 5, and the minimum school leaving age for all pupils is 16. Most of children (over 90 per cent) go to state schools where education is free. Some children go to private schools (Public schools) . Parents have to pay for the education at these schools. The most famous Public schools are Eton, Harrow, Winchester and Rugby.

2. Pre-school education is not compulsory and begins at the age of 3 or 4. Around half of the children at this age attend nursery schools. Many children there spend most of their time in some sort of play activity, they learn to listen attentively and to behave.

3. At the age of 5 children move to the following stage – primary schools. Children start learning in an infant school. Lessons begin at 9 a.m. and are over at 4 p.m. Children study “3 R’s”: Reading, wRiting, aRithmetic. There is usually no written timetable. Pupils have a lot of fun at school, drawing, reading, dancing and singing.

4. At 7 children move to a junior school. This marks the transition from play to “real work”. The period of study here lasts four years till they are 11. Pupils study a lot of subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Music, Art, and Physical education.

5. As a rule children transfer to secondary schools at 11. Nowadays system of secondary education includes comprehensive schools, as well as grammar schools and modern schools. Grammar schools provide education for selected pupils ( about 3 % ) and give them an adequate level of academic instruction preparing them for higher education. Many children of working class families go to modern schools. They give a very limited education; at this level school-leavers can’t enter the university but they can work or do some vocational training.

6. The most important examinations in British schools are GCSE

( examinations for the General Certificate of Secondary Education) and A-level (Advanced Level examination).GCSE is a national exam taken by all pupils at 16. this is the end of compulsory education. At this stage pupils can leave school if they wish. GCSE has a seven-point scale of grades denoted by the letters A to G. Those who choose to stay on at school usually study for two further years to pass A level exams. These exams will give them a chance to enter the university.
