HUMANKIND IS AGING?

1. Humankind is aging fast. Is a disaster imminent or can the problem effectively resolved?

2. In another half century, one person in five in the world will be over 60. In 1950, there were 200 million people in this age bracket whereas by 2050 there will be tow billion. For the first time in human history the elderly will outnumber children (although developed countries have been showing this tendency since 1998). The average age of the world population will grow by one-third: from 26 to 36.

3. Potential support index – the number of able-bodied people9age 15 through 64) per person over 65 – has increased in the 1950-2000 period declined from twelve to nine and by the middle of the 21” century is expected to fall to four. This change in the correlation of “workers” and “dependants’ is bound to affect the traditional social security system, whereby pensioners are supported by the working people.

4. According to UN experts, the ongoing changes are fraught with serious problems not only for the pension system. By the mid-century senior citizens will account for, one-fourth of the world’s entire urban population, their number rising 16 times – from 56 million in 1998 to 908 million. This will lead to severe housing problems. In the West , the majority of elderly people live separately from their children.

5. Medical bills in old age exceed all other expenses taken together and in the next 50 years are expected to grow, in developed countries, by almost a half. This will necessitate a reform of the entire public health system.

6. World Health Organization’s experts believe that the aging of society in industrialized countries and transitional economies will require innovative planning and drastic reforms.

7. The WHO puts forward the idea of “active aging’ – that is to say, optimizing the conditions for physical, social and intellectual well-being throughout a person’s life with a view to maximizing the healthy life span and capacity for work.
