GROUP RELATIONSHIP

1. We often do not appreciate the part groups play in our lives until we are separated from them. when we leave home to attend college, get married or take a job, many of us experience ”homesickness” –nostalgia suddenly have been severed. Indeed, life and its satisfactions take on meaning and value primarily in the context of other people.

2. When we confront difficulties, the social support and feedback of others help us to put the problems into perspective and often to deal more effectively with them. additionally, groups provide structure by which we involve ourselves in the daily affairs of life. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that people who live alone experience a substantially higher incidence of alcoholism, suicide and other pathologies than do people who live with others.

3. Prisoners who are maintained in solitary confinement reveal some of the appealing consequences of social isolation. Their orientation to the world about them is often profoundly altered. Many inmates report difficulties with thinking, concentration and memory.

4. Group consists of two or more people who share a feeling of unity and who are bound together in relatively stable patterns of social interaction. Groups are not tangible things; rather they are products of social definition sets of shared ideas. At such they constitute constructed realities.

5. We make group real by treating them as if they are real. We fabricate groups in the course of our social interaction as we cluster people together in social units: families, teams, nationalities, races, labour unions, fraternities, clubs, corporations, and the like.

6. Groups are social structures that have an existence apart from their particular relationships individual people have with one another. For this reason many groups like college, sports teams, ethnic groups, political parties and business organizations have an existence that extends beyond the life spans of specific people.

7. Group resemble chemical compounds more than they do mixtures. For example, although hydrogen and oxygen are both gases at room temperature, they form a chemical compound – water. it is the joining of molecules- and the bonding of people – that produces qualitatively new entities. Accordingly, we can speak of families ad organizations without having them down into the separate interactions that compose them.

VII. Прочитайте 7-й абзац и письменно ответьте на вопрос.

How do groups resemble chemical compounds?
