British Museum

British museum is situated in London. It is a large national museum with outstanding holdings and exhibits in archeology and ethnography. It is located in Bloomsbury district of the borough of Camden. Established by Act of Parliament in 1753, the museum was originally based on three collections: those of Sir Hans Sloane; Robert Harley, 1st earl of Oxford; and Sir Robert Cotton. The collections (which also included a significant number of manuscripts and other library materials) were housed in Montagu House, Great Russel Street, and were opened to the public in 1759.

The museum’s present building, designed in the neoclassical style, was built on the site of Montagu House in the period 1823-1852 and has been the subject of several subsequent additions and alterations. Its famous round Reading Room was built in the 1850s.

In 1881 the original natural history collections were transferred to a new building in South Kensington to form the National History Museum, and in 1973 the British museum’s library was joined with a number of other holdings by Act of Parliament to create the British library. About the half of the national library’s holdings were kept at the museum until a new library building was opened in 1997.

Plans were then announced for the refurbishment of the Reading Room, which would house a new reference collection including computer systems. Construction of the glass-enclosed Great Court, surrounding the Reading Room, began in March 1998. Among the British Museum’s most famous holdings are the Elgin Marbles, consisting mainly of architectural details from the Parthenon at Athens; other Greek sculptures from the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus and from the Temple of Arthemis at Ephesus; the Rosetta Stone, with Egyptian hieroglyphics in the top section, demotic characters in the lower section, which provided the key to reading ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs; exquisite gold, silver and shell work from the ancient Mesopotamian city Ur; the so-called Portland Vase, a 1-st century AD cameo glass vessel found near Rome; and Chinese ceramics from the Ming and other dynasties.

Tower of London

Tower of London is a historic fortress in the city of London, on the north bank of the river Thames. The entire building covers 7.5 hectares (18 acres).

The original tower, known as the White Tower, was built around 1076 by William I , out of white limestone. Its name derives from the fact that in 1240 Henry III had the building whitewashed. Christopher Wren enlarged the Norman windows in the 17th century, but the interior has retained much of its original Norman character. The White Tower is surrounded by two lines of fortifications, the inner of which is called the Ballium Wall and has twelve towers. These include the Bloody Tower, which derives from the tradition that the boy king Edward V and his brother Richard Plantagenet , Duke of York, were murdered here in 1483. The skeletons of two children were discovered under the stairs leading to St. John’s Chapel in 1674. The Wakefield Tower in the south wall is where Henry VI was found murdered in 1471.

The Dereveux Tower is named after its most famous prisoner Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, who was held there before his execution for treason in 1601. It is also where George Plantagenet, Duke of Clarence, was supposedly drowned in a barrel of Malmsey wine in 1478. The outer curtain wall has six towers and two gateways, and was surrounded by a moat fed by the Thames, but this has been dry since 1843.

The Tower was used as a royal residence from the 13th century until Elizabeth times, when it became a prison for enemies of the Crown. Many of them were executed here, such as Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard, and the 17-year-old Lady Jane Grey.

The Tower is now predominantly a museum, housing the Crown Jewels, and a magnificent collection of arms and armour. The Yeomen of the Guard, also known as Beefeaters, are another popular feature and still wear colourful uniforms of the Tudor period.

Formerly there was a menagerie here too, but when a lion attacked some soldiers here in 1835, the animals were moved to the Zoological Gardens in Regent’s park.
