LG was founded as GoldStar in the “agrarian and economically retarded” South Korea according to the data of Big Soviet Encyclopedia, vol. 13. The economy of the country had suffered seriously from the war. GoldStar began its life with the ideas like the revival of the economy and the development of production of electronics. The company Rakhee Ltd. was founded in 1947 and the company GoldStar was founded 6 years later. In 1995, after 37 years from the time of appearance of the company in the market, the trademark GoldStar was changed into LG Electronics Inc. On the first of January the company prepared a strategy of transition into a new century and announced new corporative thinking, LEAP 2005 in a year. The mark “LG” was started up instead of former GoldStar in the world market. This is the official version of the brand changing.

The observers think that the change of the trademark was caused by several factors. First of all they said that the old name didn’t answer the new aims – exploration of the world. Secondly the words “Gold” and “Star” were often met with in the names of other companies including insignificant ones. Thirdly it became necessary to join Lucky Chemical and Gold Star under one trademark. Massed advertising company accompanied the change of the brand. In Russia it came across the curious situation. “Literaturnaya Gazeta” also had a claim on the abbreviation “LG” and domain http://www.lg.ru. But it happened a bit later in 1997 when the name of corporation had been changed in the whole world.
