Last News From SHARP

The new 15 inches 3D display (LL-151-3D) for mere mortals was introduced by SHARP. For the first time this model aimed at consumer market though according to the Associated Press some less famous companies began production of 3D displays with analogous functionality for medical and research branches. This LL-151-3D allows reflecting of naturally 3D graphics with high level of detailed elaboration. It became a “window” into the 3D world. This model is required for designers, architects, cartographers and specialists in the field of remote sounding data processing, military men etc. According to the investigation data made by Stanford Resources the volume of delivery of 3D displays of different types to the market will be increased 18% yearly in the nearest future (from 2,9 mln articles of this year up to 8,1 mln in 2010).

Characteristics of LL-151-3D: resolution – 1 024*768 pixels, brightness – 370 cd/m² m in 2D regime and 370 cd/m² in 3D regime, contrast – 500/1, response time – 25 milliseconds, visual angle – 130 degrees horizontally and 115 degrees vertically. The display has built-in stereo acoustic system, DVI-I video input and 3,5 millimeters stereo-audio plug, mechanism of display fixing control at a height and lighting system designed for 50,000 hours of work.

LCD with two- and three-dimensional images is used without special glasses and gives true visual sensation of the depth. This LCD switches over electrically between two-dimensional image (flat regime) and three-dimensional image (stereo regime).

The secret of the work of 3D LCD that needn’t special glasses lies in the following: 3D LCD combines traditional TFT LCD with the technology of Switching LCD, worked out by SHARP. Switching LCD realizes optical parallax barrier and by regulation of the light distribution it allows to separate the image of the display in such a way that the right eye and the left eye catch slightly distinctive images. The light of even pixels is directed to the right eye and the light of odd ones – to the left eye. Parallax barrier method is an old well-known way of stereo display creation. The image for the left eye and the image for the right eye are sent into the TFT LCD as a stereographic pair. Each eye sees the image intended only for it and the brain joins these images perceiving them as 3D representation. Besides Switching LCD electrically regulates parallax barrier to allow making it transparent and eliminating the necessity of separation of the ways of the light distribution. That’s why the left and right eyes can see one and the same image when the ordinary 2D information is reproduced. In other words the display can also work as a traditional device of sending of the image.

This innovational display allows working out of special three-dimensional devices of image that give true visual sensation of the depth and feeling of presence. It also can be applied in already existing goods with LCD. It opens new worlds of enjoyment and makes possibilities of today wider. For example, in the sphere of PC for such applications as word processor and spreadsheets this display works as an ordinary two-dimensional one. Switched over into three-dimensional regime it allows users to enjoy special three-dimensional information, e.g. computer graphics and games with delightfully natural sensation of depth and frankness. In 1973 SHARP was the first who successfully began mass production of LCD for electronic calculators. Since then the company has actively advanced innovations in the technologies of the displays moving from simple numerical displays to matrix graphic ones, from monochrome displays to color ones and to fully video displays. SHARP is working on the development of application of 3D LCD. To increase the volume of useful information for them it is going to create cooperation and units with companies of different tendencies, dealing with working out of the equipment, software and data filling. It will work on creation of the consortium that will develop new business connected with 3D LCD. (3422 p.s.)
