Срсп 9. Sport.

Практические цели: формирование умений и навыков устной речи и письменного выражения мыслей. Практиковать студентов в обсуждений проблемных вопросов по теме.

              1. Move the Body – Move the Brain.

We all know that exercise is good for you. However some astonishing new discoveries about the effect of exercise on the central nervous system were made recently by medical experts.

Last year a team of doctors did a series of tests on some of the competitors in a race. It was discovered that during exercise a morphine-like substance is released into the blood stream.

If this theory is correct and exercise can be used as a way of elevating (возвышать) the mind, creative artists should take note as their type of work can often result in long periods of mental exhaustion (истощение).

Laurence Olivier , the actor, did weightlifting for an hour before he went on stage because he left it enabled him to give a better performance.

Edna O’Brien , the Irish novelist, enjoys yoga and running. She believes that any exercise that moves the body must also move the brain! (From “Modern English”).

Ex.1. Read the text and search for some arguments in favor of sport.

Ex.2.Answer the following questions:

1.What discovery was recently made by medical experts?

2.What was discovered with the help of a series of tests on some competitors in a race?

3.In what way can exercise be used by creative artists?

Ex.3. Discuss these questions in 3-4 groups:

  1. What role does sport at the University?

  2. Which sports are practiced at your University?

  3. Are you satisfied with your standard?

  4. What is the role of sport in modern life?

  5. How does sport influence on our health?

Give advantages and disadvantages.

Ex.4. Role play:

  1. work in groups of 4 or 5. You are people of different age and social standing. Express your attitude to sport and sportsmen in general.

  2. your friend believes that physical training is of no use to future journalists, lawyers , psychologists, etc. His opinion. State the opposite case.

  3. your friend believes . That going in for sports and taking part in competitions prevents you from studying seriously . He gives some evidence to prove his point. Argue the opposite view point .Speak about tour previous experience in sport.

Ex.5.Discuss the problems "Sport and Health".

Mini-conference to the theme: "The current situation in Kazakhstan" between the representatives of Medicine organizations, sport agencies, education systems. Each representative of groups prepares the information about the problems of sport and Health , expressing the points of view.

Ex.6.Make up situations in such a way as if you have seen the event with your own eyes. Use some details, try to sound as convincing as possible. Use some words and phrases given below.

the stadium with a seating capacity of …; a pole-jumper; in good

form; a referee; a starter ; a cross-bar;

wave a start; rushing towards; like lightning;

race past ; carrying the pole; puzzled;

plant the pole; up in the air; with a smile on his face;

awe-stricken;

pretty looking; embarrassed; with her eyes downcast;

with his pressed; land onto; break the record; the record of his life; candidate master of sports of Kazakhstan.

Ex.7.Work in pairs.

1. Ask and answer questions about the basic principles of keeping fit.

2.Interview your partner about his/her own ideas of keeping fit.

3.Interview your partner about his/ her parents’ ideas of keeping fit.

Learning recommendations:

Class activity: In this unit of the course book students are supposed to get introduced with the new material: read the text, translate into their native language, summarize in English, complete post-reading tasks and grammar exercises, discuss new speech topics, compose monologues and dialogues in the class.

Home task: Students are assigned to find out additional short information about specific topic of the unit, complete grammar exercises, prepare reports given by the teacher.
