Срсп 8. Enviromental protection.

Практические цели: Практиковать студентов в устной речи по теме, практиковать студентов в изложении текста и в высказываниях проблемных вопросов по теме, обобщение и закрепление лексического материала.

Man and the Biosphere.

Interrelation between the man and the biosphere are of a fairly complex nature. Man, like every other living organism, depends for his life on what the biosphere provides: water, oxygen, food and shelter. On the other hand, the biosphere is strongly affected by all sorts of human activity.

Technology powerfully amplifies the effects of human beings on the biosphere. Prehistoric man withdrew from the atmosphere only the oxygen he required for respiration; technological man consumes a far greater amount of oxygen to support fires, power plants and chemical processes. The carbon dioxide produced by technological processes has measurably altered the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere. Apart from the amplification of such natural processes in the biosphere, technology has introduced into the biosphere substances wholly new to it; man-made radioisotopes and a wide variety of synthetic materials such as plastics, insecticides, herbicides and numerous industrial materials. These, too, alter the biosphere.

The problem has already been discussed at a large number of conferences, some of them sponsored by the UN. However relatively little has so far been done to check environmental pollution.

Ex. 1. Answer the questions.

  • What is the implication of the statement that “interrelations between man and the biosphere are of a fairly complex nature”?

  • What is the biosphere affected by?

  • Why has carbon dioxide concentration been measurably altered in the atmosphere?

  • What kind of manufactured products has technology introduced into the biosphere?

Ex. 2. Translate into English.

Ex. 3. Your group was asked to take part in the TV show called “Save our planet”. Choose one of them and get ready to speak in this TV programme.

  1. Environment yesterday and today.

  2. Environmental problems nowadays.

  3. Water pollution.

  4. Air pollution.

  5. Ecology and people's health.

  6. Destruction of wildlife and countryside beauty.

  7. Food, water and natural resources and their shortage.

Ex. 4. Pretend you are at the Women’s Club meeting. Play the role of the gentleman and answer the following.

    1. Which in your opinion is the most serious ecological problem?

    2. What continents and countries suffer mainly from shortages of food? Can this be helped?

    3. Why are cars dangerous for the people in towns and cities?

    4. Why do you think there are more and more cars with every coming year?

Learning recommendations:

Class activity: In this unit of the course book students are supposed to get introduced with the new material: read the text, translate into their native language, summarize in English, complete post-reading tasks and grammar exercises, discuss new speech topics, compose monologues and dialogues in the class.

Home task: Students are assigned to find out additional short information about specific topic of the unit, complete grammar exercises, prepare reports given by the teacher.
