Срсп 8. Sport.

Практические цели: формирование умений и навыков устной речи и письменного выражения мыслей. Практиковать студентов в обсуждений проблемных вопросов по теме.

Ex.1.Read the text.

That September Ted had entered the State (here штат) University as a freshman in the college of Arts and Sciences. The University was only fifteen miles from Lenith, and Ted often came down for the weekend. Babbitt was worried. Ted was “going in for” everything but books. He had tried “to make” the football team, he was looking forward to the basketball season, he was on the Committee for the Freshman Dance. But of his studies Babbitt could learn nothing save “Oh God, these old teachers just give you a lot of junk about literature and economics”.

One weekend Ted proposed : “Say, Dad, why can’t I transfer over (перевестись) from the college to the School of Engineering (техническое училище)? You always say that I never study, but honest, I would study there!” “No, the Engineering School hasn’t got the standing (репутация) the College has, “Babbitt objected. “I’d like to know how it hasn’t ! The engineers can only play on any of the teams!”

All first and second year students must do physical training , but in their senior years it is optional. If a student wants to take up sports in his free time he is trained by good coaches (тренер) in well-equipped stadiums, and gyms, and on good sports grounds. Each college and university has its own sport club, which is part of a national student sports society.

Altogether 49 sports are practiced at students’ sport clubs.

The most popular are: track-and-field athletics (легкая атлетика),

skiing, volleyball, basketball, gymnastics and swimming.

Ex.2. Why didn’t Ted’s father allow him to transfer to the School of Engineering?

Ex.3.Answer the following questions and discuss.

What role does sport play at the University? Which sports are practiced at your University? Which are practiced at your faculty? What games are mostly played at the University? Are you a member of ant team? What winter sports are mostly practiced at your university? What summer sports are practiced? Do you go in for track-and field athletics? What sports are practiced at the university all year round? Do you agree that swimming, skiing, tennis and and chess are the most popular kinds of sport that are taught and practiced at the university, or do you have other ideas? In which sports are you trained? By whom are you trained? Are you satisfied with your standard? Is your coach satisfied with it? Is a credit in physical training easy to get?

Ex.4. Try to describe your favourite game. Use a dictionary to look up any special words. Let your partners guess which game you are describing. Speak according to the plan that is given in the example:

Example:

1. Number of players (per team):

Two teams of eleven players each.

2. Equipment necessary: a ball.

Each player wears shorts and special boots.

3. Place where played: a special field which has goal posts at both ends.

4. How to play and win: the players kick the ball to each other. They try to kick it between the goal posts of the opposing team. The opposing team try to stop them. The team scoring the greatest number of 'goals' wins.

5. Length of game: one hour and a half, with a break the middle.

Some of the rules: only the two goal-keepers (who; stand in front of the two goals) are allowed to touch the;" ball with their hands; no one can kick or push another player.

Ex.5. Develop the following situations.

Situation 1. Tour friend believes that physical training is of no use to future journalists , lawyers, psychologists, etc. He gives a number of arguments to support his opinion. State the opposite case.

Situation 2. Your friend believes that going in for sports and taking part in competitions prevents you from studying seriously. He gives some evidence to prove his point. Argue the opposite viewpoint . Speak about previous experience in sport.

Ex.6. Read and translate the text.

Do you go in for sports?

Check your knowledge.

What sort of shape are you in? Are you the sort of person who goes for a run each morning , or are you the other kind who gets out of breath when reaching for a cigarette?

Maybe you have a lot of energy. You go to work or school, you make decisions all day, you do extra work at home. Exercise? You don’t have enough time - why bother anyway?

Well, the answer to that question is your body design. Human beings weren’t built for sitting at a desk all day: your body is constructed for hunting, jumping, lifting, running, climbing and a variety of other activities. If you don’t get the exercise that your body wants, then things can go badly wrong. Tour mind works all day , and your to severe illness to early death.

Not a very cheerful thought, and of course the natural reaction is “It’s not going to happen to me”. Maybe, maybe not. Here are two ways of looking after yourself: firstly, by seeing if you are doing the right sort of exercise, and secondly by seeing if you have the right kind of diet. (From “Modern English International” Mozaika, 1984, №263)

Ex.7.Study the text and search for some arguments in favor of sport.

Ex.8.Summarize the text.

Ex.9.Role-play

Work in groups of four or five. You are people of different age and social standing. Express your attitude to sport and sportsmen in general.
