Сложный герундиальный оборот

Сочетание притяжательного местоимения (или существительного в притяжательном или общем падеже) с герундием называется сложным герундиальным оборотом. Do you mind my opening the window? – Вы не возражаете, если я открою окно?

В этом сочетании герундий выражает действие, которое совершает лицо ил предмет, обозначенное существительным или местоимением. Весь оборот переводится, как правило, придаточным предложением. They insisted on his entering the university. – Они настаивали на его поступлении в университет. (Они настаивали на том, чтобы он поступил в университет.) There was no hope of Jims getting tickets to the concert. – У нас не было никакой надежды, что Джим достанет билеты на концерт.

Ex.109. Translate into Russian: 1. We recommend your walking across the beautiful park first. 2. They suggested Nick’s going to the hospital to get first aid. 3. We don’t recommend your eating up there as it is very expensive. 4. Don’t miss our group’s playing in the game of football next week. 5. We won’t mind your family’s coming to stay with us. 6. He couldn’t resist my going outdoors in such lovely weather. 7. Your coming late bothers me.

Ex.110. Revision. Use the verbs in brackets in the correct form (-ing or to infinitive). 1. Don’t expect (see) many red phone boxes everywhere – there aren’t many left in London nowadays. 2. The Verbal Noun (Отглагольное существительное)

Отглагольное существительное – это существительное, образованное от глагола путем прибавления к его основе суффикса ing: to read – reading (чтение), to build – building (здание).

Отглагольное существительное обладает, в отличие от герундия, только свойствами существительного:

    1. употребляется с артиклем (the reading of the budget);

    2. имеет форму множественного числа (three readings of the budget);

    3. употребляется прилагательным или причастием и принимает предложное дополнение (но после него не может стоять прямое дополнение) (ancient writings).

Ex.112. Translate into Russian: 1. He was at three weddings and two christenings. 2. The expedition was a success: there were excavated many important findings. 3. You can see beautiful paintings of old masters in this museum. 4. You have missed two meetings of the faculty. 5. It is a friendly place for a friendly gathering. 6. You should wear suitable clothing, it’s windy. 7. Suggest different headings for the article. 8. This place was the setting for a famous film. 9. The medieval painted ceiling and a great collection of drawings make it a fascinating visit. 10. Look at the surroundings. It’s so nice here. 11. Read the text from the very beginning to the end. 12. The ice that covers the Arctic Ocean comes from the freezing of seawater. 13. Look at this ancient building; it was constructed in the 16th century.
