4. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a debilitating condition affecting the central nervous system. It is most frequent ly diagnosed in people in their late 20s or 30s. It affects 85,000 people in Britain, and twice as many women as men.
There are two main types of MS. The most common type is known as relapsing/remitting — a series of attacks fol lowed by complete or partial remission.
The rarer form is secondary progressive MS, which be gins as relapsing/remitting, but goes on to a chronic pro gressive form of the disease with no periods of remission.

6. I studied English literature, history and Spanish at Alevel, and I really enjoyed the Spanish. My teacher was very good and I had a fantastic exchange week in Barcelo na, I loved the country immediately.
Studying at degree level was a great contrast to Alevel.
At school we studied Spanish literature and history, and

we spent a lot of time on grammar. At university there was a lot of emphasis on independent learning, using the self access centre resources. I loved Southampton but the best bit was my year abroad. I spent it in Jaen in Andalucia, just north of Granada. I taught English in a private school to pupils of all ages from 14 to 50. I was also lucky enough to work on the local paper — they gave me my own weekly column writing about sport.
I really missed Spain when I came home, but I made plenty of friends there and have been back since. I’m de termined to find a career that uses my language skills and lets me travel. It’s really misleading to assume that a lan guage degree had to lead to teaching or translating jobs — there is so much you can do. I’m looking at journalism, or anything mediabased, or working as a PA in any compa ny with links to Spanishspeaking countries… I’m really looking forward to the different cultural experience.

7. All local authorities have targets to reduce the amount of household waste buried in landfill sites. In Newcastle we have to recycle 11 percent of household waste by March. We knew that to make an impact it was important to raise awareness and to have community participation. “Eco Panels” were created as a way for residents to discuss recycling waste reduction and sup porting and encouraging wildlife. It was also a chance for us to hear residents’ ideas and concerns about the services that were already available.
Residents complained that it was frustrating for them to find recycling sites full or unkempt, so we appointed two recycling assistants to check the sites regularly, clear up litter, broken glass and overflows, as well as ensure the speedy removal of burnt banks.The public also

“Eco Panels” meant that we could encourage residents to share the responsibility for waste.

*Task 12. Make up the assignments to the extracts above.

*Task 13. Look at the extracts (1–7) from Task 11. Can you tell who the target audience is?
Task 14. Take a text — a newspaper article, an essay and read it carefully. Can you determine what the writer hopes to achieve? Can you tell who the target audience is?
вание, просьба, мнение, призыв, реклама и т. д.);
• насколько оригинальна (нова) ваша точка зрения;
мерами;
• грамотно ли вы излагаете свои мысли;
• свободно ли владеете языком;

1. Tell your friend about your favourite film. (informal)
2. Persuade your boss to give you a day off. (formal)
3. Explain to the stranger the shortest way to the metro station.
(semi=formal)

1. Flight delays are frustrating to everyone — pas sengers and airlines alike. Another law will not relieve the frustration but could have many unintended conse quences.
An airline’s primary responsibility is to transport cus tomers safely and promptly. An airline that fails to meet its responsibilities risks losing those customers.

2. Feminist author Fay Weldon, who says she has a pol icy of never reading reviews about her books, does admit to an altogether more modern compulsion — checking her Google hits.
“I don’t read interviews about myself and I don’t listen to myself or watch myself on TV because you become so selfconscious. But my one falling is that I do seek out my Google ratings”, she tells me at the Edinburgh Festival.
