know how to have fun with Shakespeare, but also demon
strates that it is almost impossible to tame the Shrew com

with Shakespeare
It was perhaps asking too much of fate to put a man at
the helm of the Globe’s allfemale production of “The Tam
ing of the Shrew”, Shakespeare’s notorious, apparently
misogynist comedy. At all events, it was not to be. The
original director, Burry Kyle, departed during rehearsals,
and Phyllida Lloyd stepped in to try to tame The Shrew.
And what a play for the allwoman company to choose.
This is the comedy that has the wayward Kate so brought
to heel by the domineering Petruchio that she urges oth
ers of her sex to place their hands beneath their husbands’
boots — a sentiment that would make even the most faint
hearted feminist burn holes in her spouse’s smalls. Rather
than struggle with this troublesome piece, however, the
girls’ strategy is to have fun with it. Striding about the
stage in doublet and hose, the cast adopts its male personas
with relish, slapping each other on the back, drumming the
table and lounging with their legs apart — in short, enjoy
ing all the laddish behaviour that would still be thought un
ladylike.

It works a treat. Rather than hammer home the fact
that the men’s attitudes are outrageous — for this is a
play above all about the marriage market — it gently
sends them up. It neatly puts Petruchio’s behaviour into
context; for while his determination to bludgeon Kate
into submission may be shocking. It is at least honest,
making the haggling among her sister’s suitors come
across as grubby. It also reminds us that everyone in the
piece is disguising themselves, putting on an act, play
ing the part expected in the mating game.
Into all this strides Janet McTeer’s Petruchio with a
wild sort of integrity. McTeer makes a smashing Petruchio
and has a ball with the part… McTeer is delightfully pairs
with Kathryn Hunter as Kate. This Kate is a match for her
man. Hunter plays her transformation beautifully and de
livers the infamous final speech with such heartfelt sin
cerity that Petruchio actually weeps, until he realizes she
has beaten him at his own game…

To be tamed or not to be tamed? That is the ques
tion.
I am sure only the women company of “The Globe”
Theatre knows the right answer. They demonstrate it in
a comical, yet convincing manner in allfemale production
of the “Taming of the Shrew”, Shakespeare’s notorious
comedy.
The cast, on the one hand, enjoys all the laddish be
haviour, for instance, slapping each other on the back or
drumming the table. On the other hand, they mock at a
domineering Petruchio who wants to submit Kate and
bring her to heel. Therefore, they put his outrageous at
titudes into context.

In the end, furthermore, Kate’s flamboyant speech makes
him actually to weep. Hence, Petruchio is beaten at his own
game.

Roxie C. Laybourne, who pioneered the science of fo
rensic ornithology to help protect aircraft from collisions
with birds has died in Washington D.C. aged 92.
Laybourne worked for more than 50 years at the Smith
sonian’s National Museum of Natural History, where she
delivered the speciality of identifying dead birds from
their feathers to learn what types of birds struck air
craft.
Based on her information, aircraft engine manufac
turers strengthened fan blades and military developed
stronger fighter canopies. Altered to the dangers posed
by certain species, airport managers created plans for
shooing flocks of birds off runways. Schemes included
mowing grass, firing cannons and broadcasting bird dis
tress calls.
The feather detective — once dubbed the Miss Marple
of Eiderdown by the New York Times — became involved
in identifying birds from their remains in 1960. A Lock
heed Electra taking off from Boston had flown into a flock
of starlings and crashed, killing 62 of the 72 people aboard
the deadliest birdrelated air crash.

Laybourne, on assignment to the Federal Aviation Ad
ministration, was able to identify the type of birds in
volved in the crash from charred fragments that clogged
the aircraft’s engines. She went on to develop new meth
ods for identifying birds from fragmentary remains and
bits of feathers, using an electron microscope to compare
the bits of fluffy evidence sent to her from around the
world with the Smithsonian’s more than 650,000 bird spec
imens…
