The horizontal axis shows the days starting from Jan
uary, 1 (2006) and going to August, 1 (2006). The vertical
axis shows the LSE’s daily closing share price (in pounds).
For any given day the closing share price can be deter
mined. For example, on March, 15 (2006), the price rock
eted from 8 bln pounds to 12 bln pounds. By the 1st of
April (2006), the price began to gradually decrease by 2 bln
pounds. However, in the middle of the month, it rocketed
again to 12 bln pounds.
The solid line shows the fluctuation of the closing dai
ly share price during the month, from April, 15 to May,
15. By the end of May, the price declined to about 11 bln
pounds.
The dashed line shows the projected fluctuation of the
price during June and July. Nevertheless, it is difficult to
project all ups and downs of the LSE’s daily closing share
price in the following months of the year 2006, because a
price per share at any stock exchange is unpredictable,
changing and fluctuating.

*Task 16.
1. Have you ever had any serious disagreements be
tween your friend and you? Misunderstanding can cause
problems and even break your friendship. Therefore, I can’t
agree with the proverb: “A friend in need is a friend in
deed.” It doesn’t reflect a true friendship. Not only in need
may you lose your friend, but also in a very common situa
tion like ours. Once I had a disagreement with my best
friend on the ground where to spend our holidays. In the end
we couldn’t avoid a severe conflict and parted. I wonder if
our friendship was true?
2. Do you remember learning your ABCs? As children we
are taught to recite the alphabet forwards, backwards and
inside out. Twentysix letters which can be arranged in
upwards of half a million combinations, many seemingly
random, to form the basis of the English language. A bil
lion people speak worldwide, making it the thirdlargest
language, behind Chinese and Spanish. But how well do we
understand its idiosyncrasies? For example, can you name
a word that contains only consonants? Do you know where
the word potato originated? Now, an exciting new book
answers these questions and charts the secret life of the
English language.
3. Every day we can observe people arguing in the streets
and other public places. I am sure that small talks, quar
rels about nothing serious may cause sharp contradictions
about important issues. Several days ago I plunged into a
silly disagreement with my friend on our way to the coun
try house where we were going to have a holiday party.
4. When we start to study at the university we often hear
the following words: “Students! Try to read as many books

as possible. It will help you in future. Don’t waste time on
finding out some job, you will do it afterwards”. On the
other hand, while applying for a job, you are always re
quired to have some experience. Thus it is not definitely
clear what to do during your study at the high school; either
to read a lot of books or work getting experience.
5. “Everything is moving, everything is changing,” said
a Greek philosopher. It isn’t a secret, that he was right. Life
proves that. Nature is changing, people are changing, and
of course, you are changing. As for me, I have changed phys
ically and mentally since my childhood. What has changed
in my appearance, my inner world, my attitude to life? It’s
a very tough question. Nevertheless, I’ll try to answer it.
6. “Knowledge is power,” said Francis Bacon, an English
philosopher. I think, he mentioned knowledge gained from
books. There is no doubt, knowledge gained from books is
as important as knowledge gained from experience. Would
you use the first source of knowledge or the second one —
it depends only on you. In my opinion, despite all ups and
downs of life I value my life experience: it makes me more
sophisticated and mature. I believe that “there is no gain
without pain.”
