Если вас попросят аргументировать ответ, ины
ми словами, если вместо вопроса “When did you get up
yesterday?” вы услышите: “When did you get up yesterday?
Comment on your answer” (response time 60 sec.), вы дол
жны сразу обратить внимание на время, отведенное на
ответ, — 60 секунд, время, которое надо максимально
использовать для аргументации вашего ответа. Поэто
му для ответа на подобный вопрос следует привести не
сколько аргументов, объясняющих и / или подтверждаю
щих ваше высказывание, например, “I got up at 12 o’clock
yesterday. I had a chance to sleep much because it was my
day off. Besides, I was so tired that I needed some rest.
Moreover, my dream was so sweet that I didn’t want to
wake up. So, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to enjoy
staying in bed up to the afternoon.” Более того, вы може
те себе позволить сделать небольшое введение в тему,

например: “I was so lucky yesterday! It was Sunday, and it
was my day off. I decided to do everything I had planned for
the weekend. Firstly, I could get up late in the afternoon…”
Правило «каков вопрос — таков ответ» работает
и здесь. Однако в этом случае короткий ответ: “I got
up at 12 o’clock yesterday,” будет считаться неполным,
так как в задании вас просят прокомментировать ваш
ответ (“Comment on your answer”), а вы это проигно
рировали. Экзаменатор может подумать, что вы либо
не можете аргументировать ответ, либо не поняли
вопрос.
Как правильно понять вопрос? Как понять, что имен
но от вас требуется в задании? Как быть уверенным, что
вы «попали в цель»? Как правильно определить цель
высказывания?
Сделать это не всегда просто. Многое зависит от
формулировки задания. Например, знаете ли вы, что
подразумевается под словами to comment или tо discuss?
Это вопервых. Вовторых, четко ли вы представляе
те (себе), о чем следует говорить и, втретьих, как
это сделать. Иногда в самом задании ставятся не
сколько целей, поэтому и отвечать следует на все по
порядку.

Для того чтобы ничего не ускользнуло от вашего вни
мания, обратите особое внимание на слова и фразы, ко
торые непосредственно являются предметом обсуждения
(темой) — subject words, а также все глаголы, которые
говорят вам, что надо делать (указания), — direction
words (to analyze, to discuss, to evaluate, etc.). Например,
в следующем предложении все subject words подчеркну
ты одной чертой, а все direction words выделены жирным
курсивом:
Some television shows are dramas
, some are situation
comedies, and some are “reality shows” that deal with real
people in real situations. Describe your favourite show and
compare it with the rest. Explain your choice.
Task 8. Clarify the subject and the directions in the sentences be=
low. Underline the subject words and tick the direction words.
People believe that money spent on space research ben
efits all of humanity. Other people take the opposite view
and say that money spent on this type of research is wasted.
Tell which point of view you agree with and explain why,
using specific details and reasons. Convince the reader.

нет четкой инструкции, что надо делать. Однако и здесь
можно найти выход. Для этого попробуйте найти соот
ветствия между вопросительными словами, с которых
начинается задание, и теми реальными действиями, ко
торыми следует руководствоваться. Вам поможет логи

Вопрос всегда сформулирован так, чтобы ваш устный
ответ мог отразить вашу индивидуальность, знания, харак
тер, эмоциональность, — все то, что поможет понять и оце
нить вас как личность. Именно поэтому необходимо четко
следовать заданию (если вы отклонитесь от темы, ваш пре
подаватель может подумать, что вы недостаточно владее
те вопросом или излишне самоуверенны и не считаетесь с
поставленной задачей). Следовательно, неукоснительное
выполнение задания покажет преподавателю, что вы:
• способны четко следовать инструкциям
•владеете материалом
• логично отвечаете на поставленный вопрос
• способны организовать свои мысли и направить их по
нужному руслу в стрессовой ситуации.

1. The Los Angeles Unified School District is recruit
ing about 115 teachers from abroad because of a teacher
shortage, marking the largest group of foreign hires in
more than 20 years, according to a media report.
The teachers from the Philippines, India, Spain and
Canada will teach math, science and specialized courses for
students with learning disabilities. They make up about
oneseventh of new hires for the 2007/08 school year.
The group is the largest that the district has recruited
during its more than 20 years of hiring from abroad, ac
cording to a report published Monday in the Los Angeles
Daily News.

2. Researchers found that middleage and older women
who ate the most whole grains were less likely than those
with the lowest intakes to develop high blood pressure over
the next 10 years.
The benefit was modest. Women who consumed the most
whole grains had an 11% lower risk, but the findings add
to evidence of the cardiovascular benefits of whole grains.
