Today, English is the language of the world commun
ity. It is international. It is the language of progressive
science and technology, trade and cultural relations,
commerce and business. It is the universal language of
international sports. It is also the major language of di
plomacy. Thousands of books, magazines and newspapers
are printed in English and read all over the world by
more than 350 mln people. Geographically, it is the most
widespread language on the Earth, second only to Chi
nese in the number of people who speak it. English is the
official language of the UK, the USA, Australia, New
Zealand and one of the two official languages of Canada
(the second official language of Canada is French). It is
also spoken as a second language in many parts of India
and Africa. Besides, millions of people study English as
a foreign language. In Russia English is very popular,
too. It is studied at schools, colleges and universities.
Russia has integrated into the World Market, and the
problem of reasonable knowing of English or any other
foreign language to communicate and to do business in
the multicultural world is very urgent nowadays.

The Importance of Learning English
I believe, to get a good job means to know a lot includ
ing foreign languages. A few centuries ago English was
hardly spoken by anybody outside the British Isles. Yet
nowadays, millions of people around the world use it in
their everyday lives. English is the official language in
many countries. It has become a political issue. The spread
of English reflects the political, economic and military
might of the country. Such language is useful in world
affairs and scientific research. As for me, I’m greatly in
terested in English culture and history. Furthermore, I need
English. It’s useful to know it, because it is the only way
to communicate. I travel a lot and want to be able to make
myself understood.
First and foremost, English is necessary to get a pres
tigious and wellpaid job. It is impossible without consid
erable knowledge of English. Moreover, there are a lot of
professions and occupations for which good knowledge of
foreign languages is desirable. Among them, for example,
are all the jobs involving good managerial and communic
ative skills, advertising, PR (public relations), trade.
As far as I am concerned, my future job will be closely
connected with people. I am going to work in advertising.
Thus, I need to speak fluent English. More than that, I should
use English all the time to speak with foreign visitors. You
see, communication involves expression, interpretation and
negotiation. It is common that communication is the lifeblood
of business. I know it will be the concern of my future work
in the company; therefore, I pay much attention to studying
the communicative activities at school; I am sure, the suc
cess of advertising depends on the interpretation people give
to their meaning.

Besides, we use different words and expressions; we
learn to use intonation, gestures, facial expression, and
many other features of communication to convey our mean
ing to persons around us. By the way, our classmates also
provide practice in communication and written practice:
reports, essays, poems, business letters and job application
forms. Above all, even listening to pop music helps me to
learn necessary words and phrases.
On top of everything, I’m going to attend specialized
courses in interviewing techniques which are useful for
employers and others who interview people frequently in
their professional lives. It requires practice in the use of
the appropriate style of speech. If you want to sound like
a business executive, you have to talk the way businesses
talk while they are on the job. I hope to study business.
How can I improve my knowledge of English in the sphere
of business and management? I personally believe that
there are several ways how to do this.
Firstly, video helps to develop our imagination, it gives
us a real taste of the country.
Secondly, memory maps build up vivid mental pictures,
link the words with the images.
Moreover, situation itself (context) gives us a real un
derstanding why we should speak that way.
But with no doubt, living in an Englishspeaking coun
try is supposed to be the best way to learn. It may be:
1. students’ exchange
2. paying guest visit
3. group visit
4. language courses
5. sports, holidays
6. staying with a friend by host family
Finally, reading, listening and speaking will help me to
do my best.

In conclusion, I say that nowadays foreign languages
play a great role in all the spheres of social life; thus, my
success in my future career will depend on my abilities and
knowledge. Successful people are the ones who, when some
thing doesn’t work, try something else. Unsuccessful peo
ple keep on doing the same thing only harder. As for me, I
belong to the first group.

A Trip to the UK
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen!
Our tour is ideal for those visitors who have only sev
eral days to spend in the United Kingdom. Amongst the
many cities and towns you will see are London, Oxford,
Canterbury, Bath and Stonehenge, StratforduponAvon —
the birthplace of William Shakespeare. A great start to a
relaxing trip is to call us and we can arrange standard of
first class tickets for you. If you are traveling by train,
the car can be waiting for you at the station.
Our tour takes us past many of the famous sights of
London’s West End including Westminster Abbey, Big Ben
and the Houses of Parliament as well as Downing Street,
residence of the Prime Minister.

We travel to Buckingham Palace, the London home of
the Queen, to see the Changing of the Guard. From the
West End of London we travel to the City, rich in history
and for many centuries the leading commercial and financial
centre. We see the Stock Exchange, Bank of England. We
travel to St. Paul’s Cathedral, Wren’s famous masterpiece.
After lunch we visit the Tower of London which, over its
900 years history has served as a fortress, royal palace and
prison. Here you can see the Crown Jewels and meet the
Beefeaters in their traditional Tudor uniforms. You will
arrive back in London by a riverboat, passing under Tower
Bridge. It makes your visit to London really special.
Leaving London by a stream train is relaxed and pleas
urable. You will be given a magical day out combining travel
with visiting England’s most beautiful cities, castles and
cathedrals. You’ll arrive at your destination refreshed and
ready to enjoy the historic sights.
Our train to Canterbury takes us through Kent’s coun
tryside, known as “The Garden of England”. The tradition
al home of the Archbishop of Canterbury, was once a walled
Roman city and still has a fine medieval wall. In 1170 Tho
mas a`Becket was murdered in his own cathedral by knights
of Henry II. He was canonized shortly after and for centu
ries pilgrims flocked to his shrine. Geoffrey Chaucer wrote
his famous book “Canterbury Tales” about these pilgrims.
After our departure from Canterbury we’ll pass through the
lovely ancient seaside towns of Sandwich and Deal before
reaching Dover, where there are wonderful views of the
castle and those famous White Cliffs. On a clear day seen
across the channel, France could seem only a short swim away!
Next several days we are to devote to visiting Oxford,
StratforduponAvon, Warwick castle and, of course, Stone
henge and Bath. Oxford has one of the oldest Universities
in Britain, consisting of a large complex of colleges built

over a period of several centuries. In StratforduponAvon
the birthplace of William Shakespeare we can see many of
the places associated with the Bard, such as his Birthplace,
Grammar School, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
On the way to Warwick Castle we can see Anne Hatha
way’s Cottage in the village of Shottery. Warwick Castle
is a great medieval fortress, where a fine collection of ar
mour and works of art is contained. Passing by the Stone
henge we can’t help admiring its bronzeage 50ton pillars
created by a unique civilization in Britain more than 3000
years ago. Our tour includes a visit to the famous Roman
Baths, built by the Romans 2000 years ago in the city of
Bath in the south of England.
Leaving Bath, our journey takes us back to London. Our
next trip to the North of England will be planned accord
ing to your choice.

Carpets International, the UK’s largest carpet man
ufacturer, went into receivership on Wednesday. The
suppliers of carpets to Buckingham Palace blamed the
fashion for wooden and laminated floors as well as ad
verse currency effects for its demise. “The carpet indus
try as a whole is struggling. It has been a very difficult
one to make money in over the past decade,” says Jere
my Hilditch, an analyst at Williams de Broe, the broker.
He says changing fashions and better heating are at the
root of the decline. The rise of central heating has meant
the comfort and warmth that carpets provide are now
also accessible to those with hard floors. Even Michael
Hardiman, chief executive of the Carpet Foundation —
the trade body with a slogan: “Come back to carpet” —
admits the industry is in decline. From employing near
ly 50,000 people in 1970 it now employs 7,500. “How
many manufacturing sectors are doing well at the mo
ment?” he asks. “Textiles as a whole has had rather a
battering. Our UK consumers are buying less.” Imports
represent about 65% of the market with Belgian carpet
makers leading the way by selling products well below
the prices UK manufacturers can offer. Industry figures
highlight the decline and corresponding rise of hard
flooring whether it be wooden, laminate or linoleum.
Between 1990 and 2000 volumes of carpet sales fell 5%
while smooth flooring rose by 75%, according to the

foundation. Suppliers of wooden flooring are ecstatic.
Adrian Lee, managing director of Flooring suppliers.co.uk
based in Norfolk, says his sales have more than doubled
yearonyear.
“We’ve had huge growth and that’s largely due to
wooden flooring. I have been in flooring for 22 years and
I did carpeting for 18 of that but now it accounts for just
2% of my business whereas timber flooring accounts for
85%.” Design experts point the finger of blame for the
carpet’s demise at lifestyle and makeover programmes on
television that have encouraged minimalist living. Simon
Cavelle, director of studies at the KLC School of Design
in London, says: “The carpet industry has had a heck of a
hard time and it’s all to do with this clean, contemporary
style coming in. Wooden floors and white walls are very
popular now.” Mr Hilditch says figures show volumes of
wall coverings have fallen by 40% in the past five years
as consumers pile into paint…
