ПРЕДИСЛОВИЕ
«Иностранный язык» является одной из немногих дисциплин,
изучение которых обязательно во всех вузах. Владение иностранным
языком необходимо специалисту любого профиля, так как способствует
поиску, извлечению и широкому практическому использованию
информации из разных источников, обеспечивает возможность контактов с
зарубежными коллегами. Процесс изучения иностранного языка развивает
мыслительные способности, тренирует память, расширяет кругозор.
Программа дисциплины «Иностранный язык» предполагает
преемственность вузовского курса обучения по отношению к школьному,
при этом учтена возможность возобновить изучение английского языка
после значительного перерыва, вызвавшего утрату большинства навыков и
умений.
Учебное пособие «Английский язык для студентов-бакалавров
неязыковых специальностей заочной формы обучения» предназначено для
студентов 12 курсов бакалавриата или специалитета неязыковых
специальностей заочной формы обучения. Учебное пособие включает
четыре урока, тексты для дополнительного чтения и обсуждения,
контрольные работы, демонстрационные варианты тестов для
промежуточной аттестации, грамматический справочник с
тренировочными упражнениями.
Каждый из уроков содержит лексико-грамматические упражнения,
аутентичные тексты на актуальные темы для чтения и обсуждения, задания
на понимание прочитанного, упражнения для развития навыков
аудирования. Все задания снабжены ключами. Учебные материалы пособия
могут использоваться как для аудиторной работы под руководством
преподавателя, так и для организации внеаудиторной самостоятельной
работы студентов.
Также авторы предлагают студентам четыре контрольные работы и
демонстрационные варианты тестов с ключами, которые помогут
подготовиться к промежуточной аттестации.
Авторы с благодарностью примут все замечания и пожелания и учтут
их в дальнейшей работе.

Text A. Technology in communication
Over the years, technology has significantly changed the way people
communicate. Originally, the telephone replaced the telegraph. Now cellphones,
email and the Internet top the list of preferred communication methods.
Communication has become easier and cheaper.
The email message is replacing handwritten correspondence. People can
send an email message and quickly get a response. Many providers, such as
Google Mail and Yahoo!, provide free email accounts.
Internet-based social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook
allow people to communicate and share information and photos with others,
create new relationships and also discover old friends. This allows grandparents
to see updates and pictures of grandchildren instantly, rather than waiting for the
pictures to arrive in the mail.
The use of online chat forums allows people to converse with others in
real time without picking up a telephone. Many email providers also provide chat
capabilities as do social networking sites. Other sites allow users to join chat
rooms where they can communicate with complete strangers about a specific
topic.
Providers such as Skype and Yahoo Messenger offer the ability to use an
Internet connection to place video calls. Placing video calls make it possible for
families to see each other despite the physical miles that may separate them.
The popularity of the cellular phone has increased in recent years because
this portable telephone allows people to stay connected just about anywhere they
may go. In addition to placing and receiving voice calls, most cellphones provide
the ability to send text messages to other cell phone users. Many people use their
cellphone to access social networking websites, send instant messages, gain
access to their email accounts and place video calls.

Once upon a time, people had limited options for exchanging information
with one another. It’s probably hard for younger students today to imagine a
world where you could only communicate by actually talking directly to another
person, face to face or via telephone.
Now we have limitless options to transfer information from one person to
another. A wide range of disparate channels currently facilitate our chatter, from
texting or Skyping with one person, to posting notes via social media that have
the power to simultaneously reach everyone we’ve ever met.

With this in mind, let’s take a look at what constitutes communication in
the modern age, and explore the ways that technology continues to alter how we
talk and listen to each other:
1. ______________________________ If you’re in the same room with
someone, there’s certainly nothing faster than just opening your mouth and
talking. But in our global economy, many of the people we need to communicate
with are in different locations. Technology allows us to easily connect with
people worldwide. Via the Internet we can instantly reach almost anyone
whether through email, instant message, social media, or countless apps. As the
speed of communicating has ramped up, costs have been dramatically reduced.
2. ______________________________ Information overload has become
a reality, with the Internet providing much more knowledge at the click of a
mouse than could even be imagined in the past. This means there is much more
data that can be communicated than was previously possible, limited only by our
own ability to find, absorb, and store this information. Today we have different
apps which simplify data organization and presentation. The Spreadsheets app
from the multi-platform office solution WPS Office, for example, allows users to
more efficiently contain and categorize different types of data using commonly
used formulas.
3. ______________________________ The nature of communication has
changed along with its increase in speed and volume. Mobile devices that fit in
our pockets have tiny keyboards that make expedient communication desirable;
hence an increase in the use of shortcuts, symbols, abbreviations, and new words
that get the point across with fewer characters. (Think about Twitter, which has a
140-character minimum for every communication.) You can see this effect
everywhere, from how we text to how we actually talk, as the new lingo has a
way of making its way into the mainstream even when we aren’t typing it.
4. ______________________________ As the communications playing
field grows more complex, we have access to even deeper layers of connection
with others. You can now collaborate with others in your work group using
advanced collaboration tools that make it as easy to work with people in remote
offices as when they’re right next to you. WPS Office, for example, has office
productivity tools that allow teams to instantly share information. Users can save
their work in the cloud or on their smartphone, laptop, tablet, or desktop. The
tools give teams access to each other’s edits and comments on the same

document or spreadsheet, facilitating communication and collaboration toward
common goals.
