The global temperature increase brings (16) _____ consequences, endangering the survival of the Earth’s flora and fauna, including human beings. The worst climate change (17)______ include the melting of the ice mass at the poles, which in turn (18) _____ rising sea level, producing flooding and (19) _____ coastal environments through which small island states risk (20) _____ entirely.
Climate change also increases the appearance of more violent weather (21) _____, such as drought, fires, the death of animal and plant (22) _____, flooding from rivers and lakes, the creation of climate refugees and destruction of the food chain and economic resources, especially in (23) _____ countries.
How can we avoid climate change? First, it is important to be clear that climate change cannot be avoided. We can (24) _____ its effects and adapt to its consequences, i.e. we can fight it through the application of small and large scale (25)_____ that help to slow down climate change. These actions are known as climate change mitigation and adaptation measures.
Часть 3. Понимание прочитанного
I. Прочитайте текст:
Global problems are those which affect not only one individual but the
whole mankind. They can’t be solved in one day and require organized efforts
from the world community. If people leave these problems unsettled, it may lead to serious consequences in the future.

Global warming is considered to be one of the most dangerous threats that our culture has ever faced. The effects of global warming include more frequent extreme weather phenomena such as heat waves, droughts, wildfires, floods, heavy snowfalls and as a result people will experience water shortages, crop failures and so on.
In 2013, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth
Assessment Report concluded, “It is extremely likely that human influence has
been the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century.” The largest human influence has been the emission of greenhouse gases such as
carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. If a planet's
atmosphere contains radiatively active gases, so called greenhouse gases, they
will radiate energy in all directions. Part of this radiation is directed towards the
surface, warming it. The intensity of the downward radiation – that is, the strength of the greenhouse effect – will depend on the atmosphere's temperature and on the amount of greenhouse gases that the atmosphere contains.
Earth’s natural greenhouse effect is critical to supporting life. Human
activities, mainly the burning of fossil fuels and clearing of forests, have strengthened the greenhouse effect and caused global warming.
Climate model projections summarized in the report indicated that during
the 21st century, the global surface temperature is likely to rise a further 0.3 to
1.7C to 2.6 to 4.8C depending on the rate greenhouse gas emissions and on
climate feedback effect.
Because the climate system has a large “inertia” and greenhouse gases will
remain in the atmosphere for a long time, climatic changes and their effects will continue to become more pronounced for many centuries even if further increases to greenhouse gases stop.
Possible societal responses to global warming include mitigation by emissions reduction, adaptation to its effects, and possible future climate engineering.
II. Выберите наиболее подходящий заголовок к тексту:
A. Greenhouse effect and the global warming B. Possible causes of global warming C. Global warming is one of the greatest threats of today

III. Выпишите номера тех предложений, которые соответствуют содержанию текста:
1. Global warming is among most dangerous threats that our culture has ever faced.
2. Global warming is responsible for catastrophic weather phenomena, water shortages, crop failures, ocean current, sea level rise
3. It was globally concluded that the main cause of the warming is the human
influence
4. The emission of carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide has the most destructive effect
5. Greenhouse gases radiate energy in one direction only – towards the surface
and warm it.
6. Two factors of the strength of the greenhouse effect are mentioned in the
article – the atmosphere's temperature and on the amount of greenhouse gases that the atmosphere contains.
7. Natural greenhouse effect is important maintaining life on Earth. It was
reinforced by human activities caused global warming.
8. Climate model projections summarized in the report indicated the increase of
the greenhouse gas emissions during the 21st century.
9. Organized effort is needed to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases.
10. There is a direct dependence between the greenhouse gas emissions and
climatic change: if further increases to greenhouse gases stop, climatic changes and their effects will reduce.
IV. Ответьте письменно на вопросы:
1. What are the effects of global warming?
2. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report what is the main reason of the observed warming since the
mid-20th century?
3. What does the largest human influence include?
4. What do the greenhouse gases do?
5. What does the strength of the greenhouse effect depend on?
6. What human activities have strengthened the greenhouse effect and caused
global warming?
7. What does the phrase “the climate system has a large “inertia” mean?
