16. ADJECTIVES OF THE 3rd DECLENSION
MEDICINES ACTING ON THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
All Latin adjectives are devided into two groups:
1. adjectives of the 1st and the 2nd declensions, e.g. latus, a, um [See Unit 2, 3];
2. adjectives of the 3rd declension.
Adjectives of the 3rd declension are devided into 3 subgroups.
1 subgroup Adjectives with three endings, each gender has separate ending. E.g. silvester (m), silvestris (f), silvestre (n) silvester, is, e
2 subgroup Adjectives with two endings (the most numerous group).
E.g. nasalis (m, f), nasale (n) nasalis, e.
3 subgroup Adjectives with one ending. It means that they have one ending for three genders (m, f, n). The dictionary of adjectives with one ending consists of the word in Nominative case and the ending of Genetive case with the last part of the stem, e.g. teres, etis. The stem of such adjectives is identified by removing the ending
-is from the word in Genitive Case.
E.g. par, paris
recens, recentis recens, ntis
simplex, simplicis simplex, icis
When declined, adjectives of the 3rd declension get the endings of the vowel type of nouns.

128
«pertaining to the structure named in the stem» plus endings -is, -e. The endings -is stands for masculine and feminine gender, and the ending -e for neuter gender. If the stem ends with the letter l , the suffix -ar is used, in case the stem ends with any other letter, the suffix -al is used.
