History of Nutmeg
The early history of nutmeg dates back to the 1st century A.D., and this is
evident in the writings of Pliny, the Roman philosopher, who spoke of a
tree bearing nuts with two flavours (the nutmeg and the mace) and it is
believed that Roman priests have burnt nutmeg as incense but this is
disputed. In Vedic writings (India), it was recommended for headache,

fever and bad breath. The Arabian writings refer it to be good for stomach
ailments and also as an aphrodisiac. The ancient Greeks and Romans used
it as a brain tonic though it was rare and costly. It is an integral drug in
Chinese medicine and was used for stomach pain and inflammation. In
holistic medicine, it is an excellent liver tonic which helped to remove the
toxins. It is learnt that Emperor Henry VI fumigated the streets of Rome
with nutmegs before his coronation. Nutmeg has also been found in the
Egyptian tombs. In middle ages it was brought to Europe by the Arabs
through the Venetians. It was in the 6th century that Arab merchants
brought the nutmeg to Constantinople. It was traded by Arabs and was
sold to the Venetians for high prices. In the 14th century, half a kilogram
of nutmeg costed as much as three sheep or a cow. The trade of nutmeg
was taken over by the Dutch (1600) followed by the English after a war.
The Dutch explorers in particular, Van den Broeke and Jan Pieterscoon
took away the first batch of nutmegs from Banda islands, Indonesia (the
first specific place of origin of nutmeg) in 1608, followed by its meteoric
spread in Europe. The British East India Company brought it to Penang,
Singapore, Sri Lanka and the West Indies. Nutmeg has been used since 7th
century in China. The Chinese are responsible for our current knowledge
of the medicinal properties of nutmeg. The nutmeg was also popular with
Byzantine traders who purchased it from Arabs. It is believed that here the
plant got its name from ‘mesk’ in Arabian, translated into French, as ‘noix
nuguette’ and then it became ‘nutmeg’ in English. Earlier, it has been used
for everything from the cramps in the stomach to plague. Nutmeg is known
to have been used as a spice of high value in medieval cuisine and in the
European markets in the preparation of flavourings, medicines and
preservatives. In Elizabethan times, it was very popular as it was believed
that nutmeg could ward off the plague. The national flag of Grenada bears
a split-open nutmeg fruit on it. Connecticut of USA has a nickname as
the Nutmeg state or Nutmegger as its traders carved out nutmeg from
wood and sold. Arabs used nutmeg as an aid for digestion and also as an
aphrodisiac. In Indonesia the pulp is used to prepare a jam, ‘selei buah pala’.
It was believed that nutmeg possessed magical powers and it was recorded
by a 16th century monk who advised young men to carry the vials of
nutmeg oil to anoint their genitals for increased virility. It was also believed
that inserting a nutmeg into the left armpit helps in attracting the admirers
in social events. The nutmegs were also used as amulets to be protected
against many dangers and evils, from boils to rheumatism to broken bones
and misfortunes. According to European folklore, Pagans used nutmegs
as a symbol of luck, money, health and fidelity.
Medicinal Uses
Both nutmeg and the mace have a similar taste; nutmeg is slightly sweeter
while the mace has a delicate flavour. Nutmeg is an aromatic, stimulant

and carminative and in larger doses it is narcotic. The concrete oil is a
rubefacient while the volatile oil is a stimulant and carminative. Mace is
carminative and aphrodisiac while the wood is astringent. Nutmegs, maces
and their oils are largely used for flavouring, condiments and as
carminatives. It can be administered in delirium tremens and in insomnia.
The pills are used as anodyne and astringent in dysentery. The churna is
used as a sedative and antispasmodic in asthma, colic, neuralgia,
menorrhagia, dysmenorrhoea, spasmodic cough and lumbago. The
confection is a useful tonic for the heart, brain and sexual debility,
incontinence of urine and general weakness. The ointment is a topical
application for itching and irritable haemorrhoids. The concrete oil is used
in ringworm infections and stimulates the growth of the hair. It is a good
liniment for chronic rheumatism, paralysis and sprains. Mace is used in
low fevers, humoral asthma and bowel complaints. The roasted mace and
nutmeg are useful in chronic diarrhoea, flatulent colic and some forms of
dyspepsia and obstructions of liver and spleen. Nutmeg has narcotic and
anaesthetic action and peripherally has an irritant action which is due to
myristicin. The hallucinogenic activity of the drug is due to myristicin and
elemecin which are transmitted in human body to amphetamines. It is used
as a spice.
Non-medical Uses
The pericarp of the fruit is used to make a jam, ‘Morne Delice’, in Grenada.
The fruit is a source of a jam, ‘selei buah pala’ in Indonesia and is also used
in the preparation of fragrant candies called ‘manisan pala’ (nutmeg sweets).
It is a common constituent of cuisine all over the world. In Penang, it is
made into pickles, ‘Ais Kacang’ and it is also blended or boiled to prepare
iced nutmeg juice, ‘Lau Hau Peng’ in Penang Hokkien. In Indian cuisine, it
is used in many sweet and savoury dishes, in particular the Mughalai cuisine,
and in small quantities used in garam masala (North Indian spice mixture)
and also sometimes smoked. It is used as a spice in savoury dishes in Middle
Eastern cuisine, in cooking and the preparation of savoury dishes in Greece
and Cyprus, in the preparation of potato and meat dishes along with soups,
sauces and baked goods in European cuisine, is added to the vegetables
like Brussels sprouts, Cauliflower and String beans in Dutch cuisine, an
ingredient of curry powders in Japanese cuisine and in the production of
drinks like Bushwacker, Painkiller and Barbados rum in the Caribbean.
Other Uses
The essential oil is used in perfumery and pharmaceutical industry as an
oleochemical. It is a natural food flavouring substance in baked goods,
syrups, beverages and sweets. It is also used in the cosmetic industry, such
as in toothpastes and tobacco. In medicine, it is used in diseases related to
the nervous and digestive systems as it is an analgesic, antiseptic,

carminative, stimulant, etc. The oil is a powerful tonic, stimulates the
orgasm and dissolves the muscular fatigue in addition to reviving the vital
functions. Nutmeg butter which is expressed from the nut is a semisolid
and reddish brown with a taste and the smell of nutmeg. About 75% of it
is trimyristin which can be converted into myristic acid (14-carbon fatty
acid) which can be used as a replacement for cocoa butter and can be mixed
with cotton seed oil or palm oil and is used as an industrial lubricant. The
butter can also be used to make candles. Myristicin poisoning induces
convulsions, palpitations, nausea, dehydration and body pain and it is also
a strong deliriant. Fatal poisoning in humans is very rare but it is deadly to
pets and livestock even in small quantities. Nutmeg inhibits prostaglandin
production and it may affect the foetus in large quantitites. Though it was
considered to be an abortifacient, it is safe for culinary use.
Adulteration
The powder is often adulterated with exhausted nutmeg, corn meal, curcuma,
powdered beans, ground olive pits and coconut shells. This is often
substituted with Macassar nutmegs or Papuan nutmegs of Myristica argentea
Warburg and/or with Bombay nutmegs or wild nutmegs of Myristica
malabarica Lamarck. The mace is often adulterated with Bombay mace.

Ocaritti (Sardu), Tailapatra or Tailaparna or Nilanirgasa (Sanskrit),

Yukkali (Malayalam), Karpoor maram (Tamil).
Biological Source
Oil of Eucalyptus is distilled from the fresh or dry sickle-shaped leaves of
various species of Eucalyptus particularly E. globulus Labillardiere (Family:
Myrtaceae). The gum (Eucalyptus kino) is collected as an exudation from
the stem and the oil is distilled from the leaves. There are more than 700
species, mostly native to Australia and a small number are found in New
Guinea and Indonesia and Philippine archipelago. Outside Australia, only
15 species occur and 9 do not occur in Australia. The name ‘Eucalyptus’

comes from the Greek, ‘eucalyptos’ (eu and kaluptos) meaning ‘well-covered’
(describe the operculum) or ‘beautiful bark’. Other species used for the
commercial production of the oil include E. cineorifolia, E. dives, E. dumosa,

E. goniocalyx, E. horistes, E. kochii, E. leucoxylon, E. oleosa, E. polybractea,
E. radiata, E. sideroxylon, E. smithii, E. tereticornis, and E. viridis. E. globulus
was first collected by Jacques-Julien Houton de Labillardiere (1755–1834),
a French Botanist, who came along with the French Expedition, on the
South-East coast of Tasmania in 1792–1793 and was described by him in
1791–1794.
Geographical Source
The main habitat is Australia and Tasmania. The species which is
indigenous to Australia is cultivated in the high lands of India, chiefly on
the Nilgiris. The species are cultivated throughout tropics and subtropics
including America, Southern Europe, Africa, the Mediterranean basin,
the Middle East, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, China, Indonesia and the
Indian subcontinent. Eucalyptus oils are produced in Portugal, South
Africa, Spain, China, Brazil, Australia, California, Southern Europe, India
and Paraguay.
Collection and Preparation
The leaves are collected from the older parts of the trees and dried to express
the oil. There are two types of steam distillation, water/steam distillation
and direct steam distillation. The former is an improved method in which
the still contains a grid which keeps the plant material above the water
level. The water is boiled below the charge and wet steam passes through
the plant material. During the process of distillation, only very tiny
molecules can evaporate, so they are the only one which leave the plant.
These extremely small molecules make up the essential oil. This proccess
involves the use of steam to percolate and vapourise out the essential oils
fom the plant material, with the subsequent condensation of steam and
the essential oil prior to the separation.
Steam distillation is a process for the materials that are temperaturesensitive (like the essential oils). The traditional method of steam distillation
is still used around the world today. The plant material is loaded into the
extraction chamber and compacted tightly. The steam is released into the
bottom of chamber as the boiler heats the water, and starts to travel upward,
thus, saturating the material. The steam impregnates the plant fibre causing
it to release the oil molecules as a gas from the molecule channel. Then, the
steam carries the gas to the condenser where it goes through a phase change
condensation as it passes through the cooling process in the swan neck
and liquifies into water and oil. The mixture of oil and water then flows
into the separator where the oil can rise to the top of the water to be poured
off into the containers which can be drained off. The vertical steam
distillation offers the greatest potential for protecting the therapeutic
benefits and the quality of the essential oils. Similarly, the temperature
also has a distinct effect.

Characters
Macroscopic Characters
The leaf stalk or the petiole is twisted and the lamina is sickle-shaped. It
measures 8–30 cm in length and 2–7 cm in breadth, coriaceous, bifacial
with an acute or acuminate tip. The base is unequal, obtuse to round with
an uneven or revolute margin. The colour is greyish-green to pale yellowishgreen and glaucous, glabrous or glandular punctate. The venation is pinnate
reticulate. The veins of the first order run to margin and anastamose parallel
to the margin. The leaves are evergreen and covered with oil glands. It has
an aromatic odour and bitter cooling taste.
Microscopic Characters
Anatomically, the upper and lower epidermis of the leaf is made of
polygonal cells with thick cutinised outer walls and both the layers possess
sunken stomata. The mesophyll is differentiated into palisade and spongy
parenchyma. Within these tissues occur large, subglobular internal glands
lined with secretory epithelium containing yellow eucalyptus oil. Some of
the cells of spongy parenchyma contain rosette like aggregates of calcium
oxalate. Fibrous pericycle occurs outside the vascular bundles in the region
of the midrib and the petiole.
Chemical Constituents
The fresh leaves contain about 0.4–1.6% of volatile oil (the dried leaves
about 1–3%) of which 54–90% is eucalyptol (C
O – 1,8-cineol, 1,8-Epoxy-

p-menthane, 1,3,3-Trimethyl-2-oxanicyclo(2,2,2)octane, Cajeputol) and
balance being composed of eudesmol, alpha-pinene (2.8%), p-cymene
(2.7%), aromadendrene (C15H24), cuminaldehyde, globulol, pinocarveol,
d-pinene and other terpenes in addition to crystallizable resin, a bitter
principle, tannin, cerylic alcohol, butyric aldehyde (C4H8O), valerianic
aldehyde (C5H10O), phellandrine, eucalyptic acid and calcium oxalate.

comprises up to 90% of the essential oil is colourless liquid, cyclic ether
and a monoterpenoid which has a density of 0.9225 g/cm2, a melting point
of 1.5°C and a boiling point of 176–177°C. Eucalyptus oil is a collective
generic name for the oils from the genus. The gum contains kino-tannic
acid, catechin and pyrocatechin.
History of Eucalyptus
The Australian aboriginals use the infusion of eucalyptus leaves as a
traditional medicine for body pains, sinus congestion, fever and colds. The
botanical collections of Eucalyptus species have been made in 1770 by Joseph
Banks and Daniel Soalnder with Captain James Cook at Botany Bay near
the Endeavour River in Northern Queensland, Australia, though they have
been seen by the European explorers. They have collected E. gummifera
and E. platyphylla. David Nelson (1777) on Cook’s third expedition collected
E. obliqua (the French Botanist, L’Heritier coined the generic name,
Eucalyptus, from the Greek roots eu (well) and kaluptos (covered), in
reference to the operculum of the flower bud which protects the developing
parts of the flower and is shed at flowering; and the species obliqua from

Latin, obliquus referring to the unequal leaf base) on Brunny island in
Southern Tasmania and took the specimen to the British Museum in
London. The surgeons on the First Fleet, Dennis Considen and John White
(1788) distilled eucalyptus oil from the leaves of E. piperita growing on the
shores of Port Jackson to treat the convicts and marines. Subsequently, the
oil was extracted by the early colonialists. Several more species were
collected, named and published in the 19th century by James Edward Smith,
an English Botanist, from the regions of Sydney like E. pilularis, E. saligna
and E. tereticornis. The French Botanist, Jacques Labillardiere, collected the
first endemic Western Australian species, E. cornuta from Esperance area
in 1792. The first comprehensive account of the genus Eucalyptus was due
to the work of Baron Ferdinand von Mueller, the German Botanist and
explorer (the Director of the Botanical Garden, Melbourne, Australia, from
1857 to 1873), who made known the qualities of Eucalyptus all over the
world and led to its introduction into Europe, North and South Africa,
California and the nontropical South America. He was the first to suggest
that the leaves might be of use as a disinfectant in malarial fever. He also
promoted the disinfectant qualities of Eucalyptus and also encouraged
Joseph Bosisto, a pharmacist from Melbourne, Australia, to investigate the
commercial potential of the oil. In 1852, Bosisto set up a distillation plant
to start the industry near Dandenong, Victoria, and extracted the oil from
E. radiata. This later became the generic ‘oil of eucalyptus’ or ‘Bosisto’s
Eucalyptus Oil’ and this brand still survives in the market. The details of
Mueller’s work appears in Flora Australiensis of George Bentham (1867)
and this remains the only complete Australian flora even today and is the
most important early systematic treatment of the genus. In India, the
plantations were made in 1863 in the Nilgiris at Ootacamund (Ooty). In
1870, F. S. Cloez, the French Chemist, identified and ascribed the name
eucalyptol to the dominant portion of E. globulus (Tasmanian blue gum)
oil, now referred to as cineole. By 1880s, the surgeons began using the oil
as an antiseptic during surgeries. Bentham’s work was later elaborated by
Joseph Henry Maiden (1903–1933) and by William Faris Blakely (1934).
Eucalyptus has a long history in India. Around 1790, it was first planted by
the ruler of Mysore, Tippu Sultan, in his palace garden on Nandi hills,
near Bangalore, Karnataka. Subsequently, it was introduced in the Nilgiri
hills, Ootacamund, Tamil Nadu, in 1843. From 1856, regular plantations
were raised to meet the demand for firewood. The first plantation was
raised at Malabavi (Devarayanadurga), Tumkur district by the Forest
Department in 1877.
Medicinal Uses
Eucalyptus oil is a stomachic, carminative, expectorant, rubefacient,
antiseptic, febrifuge, stimulant, diaphoretic, antimalarial and antiperiodic.
It is much used for alleviating the symptoms of nasopharyngeal infections,

for treating coughs and as a decongestant. It is taken internally in the form
of mixtures, inhalations, lozenges and pastilles and applied externally as
ointments and liniments. The oil increases the flow of saliva, gastric and
intestinal juices thus aiding in appetite and digestion. It is used in the
treatments of catarrh of the bronchopulmonary mucous membranes,
intermittent and septic fevers, croup, diphtheria, whooping cough, purulent
catarrh of genitourinary organs, surgical wounds, ulcers, etc. The leaves
are chewed to clean the breath and harden the spongy and bleeding gums.
The leaf infusion checks the secretions in bronchitis and coryza. The tincture
is used in croup and in pulmonary gangrene. It is also useful in purulent
catarrhal affections of the bladder, urethra and vagina, and in chronic
cystitis with haematuria. The extract of the leaf is also used as a local
application in erysipelas of the face, legs and scrotum. It also increases the
heart beat, lowers the arterial tension and speeds up respiration. It is
eliminated through perspiration (skin), urine (kidneys), bronchi (lungs)
and milk. In higher doses, it is an irritant of the alimentary canal and
produces eructation, indigestion, nausea, vomiting and purging. It is also
a narcotic poison in toxic doses, which paralyses the respiratory centre in
the medulla of the brain. It controls asthma and is used in mouthwashes
and in rhinosinusitis. Topical application reduces inflammation and pain
in headaches on bending, frontal headache, nasal obstruction, etc. The oil
is an ingredient of ‘cathedral oil’ that is used for sterilising and lubricating
urethral catheters.
Culinary and Other Uses
Eucalyptol is used as a flavouring agent, for fragrance and in cosmetics. It
is used in baking goods, confectionery, meat, cigarettes and beverages.
The oil is a natural insecticide and sometimes used to clean the swamps
for reducing the risk of malaria. The oil is antibacterial and is used for
cleansing, deodourising the respiratory tract, and in very small quantities
in dental care, soaps, detergents, lotions, cough drops and decongestants.
It also stimulates the immune system. The oil possesses insect repellant
(disinfectant) properties which destroys the lower forms of life, and used
as an ingredient in commercial mosquito repellants and also as a
biopesticide. The plant is also used as an ornamental tree, for timber,
firewood and pulpwood. It is used in industries like fence posts, charcoal,
cellulose and biofuel. The plant shows a very fast growth and is suitable
for windbreaks and to reduce erosion. It is also used for lowering the water
table and thus reduces soil salination (as it draws large amounts of water
by transpiration). The nectar is the source of high quality monofloral honey.
The wood is used in the manufacture of a traditional Australian aboriginal
wind instrument, digeridoos. All parts of the plant are used to make coloured
dyes ranging from yellow and orange through green, tan, chocolate and
deep rust red. In veterinary medicine, the oil is administered in influenza
