to keep off – 1)держаться в отдалении, не подпускать / to stay away from.

•Keep off the benches. The paint is wet. Не приближайтесь к скамейкам. Краска свежая.

2) избегать, не касаться (темы) / not to talk about a particular subject, to avoid mentioning a specified subject.

•He started talking about it. I tried to keep off the subject. Он начал говорить об этом. Я старался избегать темы разговора.

to keep on – продолжать, поддерживать (несмотря на трудно-

сти) / to continue with something; to continue despite difficulties.

ции) / to practise a skill or habit that you learned in the past.

•The English are very strong at keeping up old customs. Англича-

•I don’t think I can afford to keep up my guitar lessons. Не ду-

to keep up (with) – придерживаться, справляться, не отставать, успевать за кем-либо (находиться на том же уровне или что-либо делать с такой же скоростью) / to stay at the same level as sоmеbоdy/ something, to go at the same speed as someone or something.

19. to let (flet, let)

to let (flet, let) – позволять, разрешать.

to let down – 1) подводить, разочаровывать, обманывать / to disappoint someone by failing to do what you agreed to do or what you were expected to do.

•They let us down badly by not completing the work on time. Они нас подвели, так как не смогли закончить работу вовремя.

•‘‘I know I let you down when I didn’t do what I promised. I’m

really sorry.” Я знаю, я разочаровал ее, когда не сделал то, что обещал. Я действительно сожалею об этом.

2) удлинить, сделать длиннее (об одежде и т.д.) / to lengthen (clothes).

Антоним – to take up – укоротить.

• I need to let down my dress, it’s too short. Мне необходимо уд-

to look – смотреть, выглядеть, казаться.

to look after – заботиться, присматривать за чем-либо или кем-

либо / to take care of someone or something.

•When I have to travel on business, my parents usually look after my children. Когда мне приходится ехать в командировку, мои родители обычно присматривают за детьми.

to look ahead – планировать, предусматривать / to think about and plan the future.

•We have to look ahead and try to estimate our needs for the next few years. Мы должны смотреть в будущее и постараться оценить наши потребности на несколько лет вперед.

to look at – 1) смотреть на кого-либо, что-либо.
