6. to bring (brought, brought)

to bring (brought, brought) – приносить, доставлять.

to bring about – вносить, изменять что-то (ситуацию) / to make something happen, especially to cause changes in a situation.

The end of the war brought about great changes. Окончание войны принесло большие перемены.

to bring back – 1) возвращать, вызывать в памяти, вспомнить / to cause to recall, to make someone remember or think about something from the past.

This smell brings back childhood memories. Этот запах вызыва-

ет воспоминания детства.

2) вернуть что-либо / to return something.

Yes, you can borrow my pen, don’t forget to bring it back to me when you’re finished. Да, можешь взять мою ручку и не забудь вернуть ее, когда закончишь.

to bring down – 1) свергнуть кого-либо; подвести, снизить (популярность, цены) / to cause to fall

These measures brought down the government. Эти меры сни-

зили популярность правительства.

2) испортить настроение / to make unhappy.

This sad music is bringing me down. Эта грустная музыка портит мне настроение.

to bring forward – переносить (дату, время) на более ранний срок / to move something to an earlier date or time.

Because of recent events, the meeting has been brought forward to the 29th. Ввиду недавних событий встреча была перенесена на 29.

tobringin– 1) вводить, вносить (законопроект, предложение) / to introduce a new law or system.

The government are planning to bring in a law banning hunting.

Правительство планирует внести законопроект о запрете охоты.

2) приносить доход / to create profit/money.

His plan brought in lots of money. Его план принес много денег.

to bring off – справиться / to accomplish something difficult, something people had considered impossible or unlikely.

No one thought Chuck could get an A in that course, but he brought it off. Никто не думал, что Чак получит высшую оценку по этому курсу, но он справился.

to bring on – навлекать, вызывать / to cause something unpleasant, an illness.

The damp weather brought on his cold. Сырая погода вызвала его простуду.

to bring round/to – 1) приводить в себя (в сознание) / to cause to regain consciousness.

They poured cold water on his face tobring him round. Чтобы его привести в себя, они плеснули на его лицо холодной воды.

(to).

She tried to bring him round to her point of view. Она старалась убедить его в правоте своей точки зрения.

to bring together – сплотить, собирать кого-либо вместе / to create a situation in which people meet and do something together, especially when the would not usually do so.

The attack on the town really brought people together. Нападе-

to bring up – 1) воспитывать / to raise, rear or educate a child.

My grandparents brought me up after my parents died. Дедушка

to call – звать, называть, вызывать.

to call around – звонить многим людям в разные места, обзва-

нивать / to phone many different places / people.

We called around but we weren’t able to find the car we needed.

Мы сделали много звонков, но не смогли найти нужной нам машины.

to call someone back – перезвонить, ответить на звонок звон-

ком / to return a phone call.

I called the company back but the offices were closed for the weekend. Я перезвонил в компанию, но все офисные службы были закрыты на выходные.

to call for – 1) требовать / to demand.

The farmers are calling for assistance from the government. Фер-

меры требуют помощи от правительства.

2) нуждаться, просить / to require, to need.

The manager said that the situation called for some difficult decision. Управляющий сказал, что ситуация нуждается

впринятии некоторых трудных решений.

3)заходить за кем-либо.

I’ll call for you at 7 o’clock. Я зайду за вами в 7 часов.

to call in – 1) заходить, заскочить к кому-либо, нанести крат-

кий визит / to visit briefly.

to call off – отменять, отложить / to cancel.

I hope they don’t call the concert off because of this rain. Я наде-

to call on/upon someone – 1) приглашать высказаться, призы-

вать кого-либо сделать что-то / to ask for an answer or opinion.

The professor called on me for question 1. Профессор попросил меня ответить на вопрос 1.

2) навещать, наносить визит, зайти к кому-либо / to visit formally.

Our representative will call on your company next Monday. Наш представитель нанесет вашей компании визит в следующий понедельник.

3) призывать на помощь.

We are calling upon you to help us. Мы призываем вас помочь нам.

4) вызывать / to ask someone for an answer in class.

to call out – 1) вызывать на помощь / to order to come to somebody’s help.

All firefighters were called out to save the burning building. Что-

She savеd her life by calling out for guards. Она спасла свою жизнь, позвав на помощь охранников.

to call up – 1) призывать на военную службу, мобилизовывать / order to join the army.

to carry – вести, перевозить.

to carry off – успешно выйти из трудной ситуации / to handle a difficult situation successfully.

She carried her speech off well. Она с успехом произнесла свою речь.

to carry on (with) – продолжать, вести (дело) / to continue with.

Carry on with your work while I am out. В мое отсутствие про-

должай свою работу.

to carry over – отложить, перенести на другое время, дату / to take something that you earn or are given in one year or period of time into the next one carry-over.

You are not allowed to carry over holiday entitlement from one year into the next. Вам нельзя переносить отпуск с одного года на следующий.

to carry out – проводить (эксперименты), выполнять / to conduct an experiment.

The investigators have been carrying out tests on the pieces of plane recovered after the accident. Исследователи проводили тестирование обломков самолета после катастрофы.

to carry through – доводить до конца, выполнить с успехом / to complete successfully.

I don’t think anyone but Denis can carry this project through.

to come (came, come) – приходить, подходить; прибывать; случаться.

to come across – встретиться с кем-либо, натолкнуться на что-

то случайно / to find something by chance.

Синонимы – to bump into somebody, to run into somebody.

Here is an old photo of me. I came across it when I was looking for my passport. Вот моя старая фотография. Я натолкнулся на нее случайно, когда искал свой паспорт.

to come apart – разбиваться на кусочки, разваливаться на час-

ти / to break into separate pieces.

It broke when I picked it up. Everything just came apart. Оно разбилось, когда я взял его в руки. Все просто развалилось на кусочки.

to come (a)round – наступать (происходить, когда речь идет

орегулярных событиях) / to happen again (for regular events).

Christmas soon comes around, doesn’t it? Скоро Рождество,

правда?

to come (a)round(to) – 1) убеждаться / to be persuaded to change your mind (about).
