At school, we had to stand up whenever a teacher entered the room. В школе мы должны были вставать, когда учитель входил в класс.

to stand someone up – обмануть, наколоть / to fail to meet them on purpose, usually for a romantic date.

He didn’t come. He stood me up! Он не пришел. Он меня на-

to stand up for – защищать, отстаивать; поддерживать / to defend something because you believe in it, to support in an argument or fight.

You have to stand up for what you believe in. Нужно стоять за то, во что ты веришь.

I know that my best friend will always stand up for me. Я знаю,

что мой лучший друг будет всегда меня поддерживать. to stand up for oneself – постоять за себя.

You must stand up for your rights. Вы должны стоять за свои права.

to stand up to – смело встречать, сопротивляться, противосто-

ять кому-либо, чему-либо / to resist or not to give in to someone in a powerful position, to argue your case.

It was brave of her to stand up to those bullies. Было смело с ее стороны противостоять бандитам.

to stay – останавливать(ся), задерживать(ся).

to stay ahead – выйти вперед / to remain in a better position than them.

We have to invest in new equipment if we want to stay ahead of the competition. Нам нужно инвестировать в новое оборудование, если мы хотим выйти вперед в соревновании.

to stay away from/off – не приходить, отсутствовать, сторониться, избегать, держаться подальше от кого-либо / to avoid someone or a place, not to go near them.

I told you to stay away from that part of town, it is dangerous.

to stay behind – оставаться / to remain in a place after everyone else has left.

The teacher asked me to stay behind after class to finish my work.

to stop away – не ходить, не посещать / to deliberately not go back to a place.

34. to take (took, taken)

to take (took, taken) – брать, взять.

to take aback – удивлять, ошеломлять, шокировать кого-либо / to surprise.

be taken aback – захватить/застать врасплох, быть пораженным, испуганным, шокированным / to be strongly surprised.

We were taken aback when they said they were getting married. Nobody expected it. Мы были поражены, когда они сказали, что собираются пожениться.

to take after – походить на кого-либо из родственников или членов семьи внешне или по поведению / to resemble a parent or family member or to look or behave like an older relative.

She’s blond with blue eyes. She takes after her father. Она блон-

to take along (with) – брать кого-либо, что-либо с собой /you take someone or something with you when you go somewhere.

I took Sue along to the party. She really enjoyed it. Я взял Сью на вечеринку. Ей там очень понравилось.

Shall we takesome sandwiches along?That is always appreciated.

to take apart – 1) разобрать что-либо на части / to separate something into the parts it is made up of.

He took the machine apart and couldn’t reassemble it. Он разо-

брал машинку и не мог собрать ее обратно.

2) разнести кого-либо (что-либо) в пух и прах / to defeat somebody easily

They were simply taken apart by the opposition. Оппозиция разнесла их в пух и прах.

to take (a)round – сопровождать и показать достопримеча-

тельности / to take someone to a place and show them it.

When I arrived, she took me round and introduced me to everyone. Когда я приехал, она провела меня и представила всем присутствующим.

to take aside – отвести кого-либо в сторону / to isolate a person from the rest of a group to talk to them privately.

After the meeting, he took me aside and asked me what I really thought. После собрания он отвел меня в сторону и спросил, что я думаю.

to take away – 1) переставить, убрать / to remove something from its place and put it elsewhere.
