23. to pull

to pull – тянуть, тащить.

to pull apart – 1) разрывать, разнимать, растащить, делить на две или более частей / to separate two or more things.

•The teacher had to pull the two boys apart to stop them fighting.

Учителю пришлось разнимать двух учеников, чтобы они не подрались.

2) критиковать, разнести в пух и прах / to criticise an idea or something written.

•She pulled my arguments apart in about thirty seconds. Он раз-

to pull away – отъезжать / to start moving (about a vehicle ).

•He knocked the cyclist over as he was pulling away from the junction. Отъезжая от перекрестка, он сбил велосипедиста.

to pull back – оттягивать, отступать / to move something in a backwards direction.

ройку / to demolish a building or other structure.

•The old theatre was pulled down and replaced by a block of flats.

рять / to move something from a higher position to a lower one; leave somebody in a weak condition.

•The sun was shining in my eyes so I pulled down the blinds. Сол-

to pull in – 1) прибывать на место, на станцию / to drive to a place to stop, to arrive.

Антоним – to pull out.

•The bank’s over there. Stop and pull in behind that car. I’ll get out here. Банк вон там. Остановись и встань позади того автомобиля. Я выйду здесь.

2) притягивать внимание / to attract.

•He’s a very popular singer at the moment. He can pull in an enormous crowd. Он сейчас очень популярный певец. Он может собрать огромное количество публики.

to pull off – 1) добиваться чего-либо, выигрывать, удаваться / to succeed in doing something

to pull off the deal – успешно завершить сделку.

•We’ll make a lot of money if we can pull off this deal. Мы зарабо-

2) снимать, стаскивать (одежду, обувь).

• He pulled off his cap and bowed. Он снял кепку и поклонился.

to pull on – натягивать, быстро одеваться / to put on clothes quickly.

to pull out – 1) вытаскивать, удалять / to extract something.

•It was very painful. The dentist pulled out two of my teeth. Было очень больно. Дантист мне удалил два зуба.

to pull out of – выйти, расторгнуть (контракт, договор) / to decide not to continue with an activity or agreement.

•We signed a contract. We can’t pull out of the deal. Мы подписа-

to pull over – 1) съехать на обочину / to drive a car to the side of the road.

to pull round – вылечиться, прийти в нормальное состояние / to recover consciousness or from an illness.

to pull through – 1) поправиться, вылечиться от серьезной бо-

лезни / to recover after a serious illness.

•The doctor came to tell me that John would pull through. Доктор пришел, чтобы сказать мне, что Джон вылечится.

2) оправляться от потрясения, выйти из тяжелой ситуации / to succeed despite difficulties.

•If all employees work harder, the company will definitely pull through. Если все работники будут трудиться лучше, компания определенно преодолеет трудности.

to pull yourself together – 1) взять себя в руки / to regain control of your emotions, to bring one’s feelings under control.

•Stop crying. It’s time to pull yourself together. Перестань пла-

2) работать дружно / to cooperate and work as a group to achieve something.

•We can do this, if we all pull together. Мы можем сделать это,

to pull up – 1) остановиться / to stop.

•A taxi pulled up just as I came out of the airport. Такси подъеха-

24. to push

to push – толкать, нажимать.

to push ahead – продвигать, пробивать / to continue with a plan or arrangement when there are problems or others wish to stop).

•We’ve had a few problems but we have decided to push ahead.

to push around – помыкать кем-либо, грубо разговаривать / to tell someone to do something in a rude way.

•When I was young I was pushed around by my big brother. Ког-

to push back – откладывать / to delay an appointment until a later date or time.

to push past – проталкиваться, расталкивать / to press roughly into someone as you pass them.

•The government pushed the legislation through very quickly.

25. to put (put, put)

to put (put, put) – класть, ставить, положить.

to put across – успешно завершить какое-либо дело, понятно объяснить / to explain successfully or to express something.

Cиноним – get across/over.

•Not a very good presentation. He didn’t put his ideas across very well at all. Не очень хорошая презентация. Он совсем неудачно изложил свои идеи.

to put aside/by – откладывать деньги, чтобы сохранить / to save

(money etc.).

•He’s got enough money. He has put some aside. У него достаточ-

to put at – 1) примерно оценивать (стоимость , возраст и т.д) / to roughly calculate a cost or figure.

to put down – 1) поставить, положить вниз, опустить / to stop carrying or holding something.

•The minister put the recent economic problems down to the rise in oil prices.

• A few suggestions have been put forward for consideration. Не-

2) выдвигать кого-либо / to suggest someone for a job or position (a person or a name etc.).

•I’ve put Peter’s name forward for the post in accounts. Я предло-

to put in – 1) устанавливать новое оборудование или новую систему / to install new equipment or a new system.

•We’ve just had a new bathroom put in. Нам недавно оборудова-
