Revision of the Participles

Ex.1. PARAPHRASE the sentences using participles, participial phrases and predicative constructions with participles, where possible.

A. After the professor had been interrupted three times, he refused to continue his lecture. 2. We stood there for a while and the rain was still pouring. 3. The boy who was examined by the doctor was sent to the hospital. 4. When we were at our second year we had a festival of fairy tales. 5. I found them as they were rehearsing the play. 6. The student was caught as he was cribbing at the exam. 7. Where are the people who were waiting for you in the hall? 8. He looked at me as if he were astonished by my request. 9. The boy sat all by himself and looked very pleased with life. 10. As I was constantly interrupted I refused to go on speaking.

B. 1. He was deafened by the noise and did not at once notice when it stopped. 2. After I tried various topics of conversation I asked her to tell me who all the people at table were. 3. I couldn’t ring him up as I didn’t know his phone number. 4. When it was put to vote the resolution was carried unanimously. 5. Several points of the plan that was agreed upon require certain changes. 6. “These are pretty”, she exclaimed as she picked up a bouquet of violets and pinned them on. 7. From a notion, which he once took into his head, he parted very slowly. 8. He may forget it unless he is reminded. 9. He lay awake all night and thought of what had happened. 10. The light, which was streaming from the half open door, dazzled him.

C. 1. He plunged into the great heap of letters that had long been waiting for him. 2. We went to see our friends who had just returned from a far voyage. 3. The front page carries a picture of the first liner that is being launched from the new shipyard. 4. He was not happy. The thought worried him. 4. The boy tried to put together the pieces of a gramophone record that had broken. 5. From the kitchen came a pleasant smell, some appetizing food was being cooked there. 6. He hailed a cab and told the man to drive to Park Lane. 7. The lorries drove closer to the ship that was being unloaded. 8. Mr. Smith returned to the inn, went up to his room and ordered lunch to be brought up. 9. If it is properly handled, the machine may serve longer. 10. He had a massive gold watch, which had belonged to his father. 11. The sidewalks were crowded with people who came to watch the demonstration.

Ex.2. IDENTIFY and correct errors in the use of participles in each sentence.

1. The police kept an updating file on all people reported to be dangerous. 2. A couple needing a yard for their children rented the house advertising in the weekend newspaper. 3. Money spent on frivolous items is money completely wasting. 4. Because she was a lively and amused person, hostesses knew Paula would keep their guests entertaining. 5. The excited movie drew large crowds of excited children. 6. Stimulated by the teacher’s presentation, the class asked many thought-provoked questions. 7. The children, delighting by the amusing clown, laughed throughout the performance. 8. The family, tiring from the exhausting trip, fell asleep as soon as they went to bed. 9. The newly electing governor impressed the reporters with her interested press conference. 10. After a grueling review session, some confusing students asked the teaching assistant for still more help.

Ex.3. STATE whether the ing-form is a gerund, a participle or a verbal noun.

1. They went on talking, as though nothing happened. 2. He had in no way sacrificed his principles by sending her flowers. 3. After saying this, he cursed himself for not having said the opposite. 4. Without drawing another breath, he regained his feet. 5. Being too particular about her behaviour, she felt herself incapable of doing so. 6. Not being a fool in housekeeping, she always happily avoided being extravagant in her purchases. 7. Everybody here knows all your doings. 8. She had an opinion about everything: rewrites, casting, the hiring of directors, art-directors, costume designers and directors of photographers. 9. There being no time to lose, we started at once. 10. She sat placidly beside him on the porch in the deepening purple twilight and listening to the chirping of the night bird in the trees. 11. “Excuse me for asking,” Ron said. “But it was my understanding from yesterday that apart from you and your brothers, there's nobody here.” 12. His instincts told him there was something special in the face and bearing of this person. 13. And that being the case, I would prefer that the finer things went to someone who will take care of them, such as yourself.” 14. “Yes, yes, I know,” said the Father, his fingers combing the gray-white of his beard as he stood assessing Sonya. 15. He took care of the hiring and firing of domestic staff and gardeners, the buying and the driving of cars, and of course all the security duties. 16. The wind came up out of the valley, smelling of gas fumes and Chinese food. 17. Looking at the medallion he had the sense he’d sometimes had waking in the morning from an intense dream but unable to remember the details. 18. There’d been a moment between the naming of the winner and Bob’s applauding. 19. The only damage done to the vessel was the breaking of its hull by the rocks. 20. Your talking like this only makes the matters worse. 21. The Military junta that had taken charge of the running of the city during this crisis was headed by generals. 22. He had barely slept, thinking of what had happened the night before. 23. There were lights burning in all the palace windows. 24. A chorus of warnings instantly erupted behind her. 25. What could he hear? Nothing out of the ordinary – the cry of birds, wheeling overhead, the coarse breathing and snorting of the horses, the slap of the reins against their massive necks. 26. “Don’t you try hiding anything from me.”

Ex.4. USE appropriate forms of the Participles instead of the infinitives, where possible.

1. She has a good command of the language, (work) as interpreter for many years. 2. “I like it here,” she said, (seat) herself at the table nearest to the window. 3. (Arrive) at the airport where he was to change, he had to wait for three hours for the connection. 4. He looked at the scene (shake) to the depth of his heart. 5. He introduced me to a colleague, recently (arrive) after a cruise round South East Asia. 6. I saw a vague figure (direct) towards me. 7. The river canal (build) in this area will serve the needs of 4.5 million citizens. 8. We saw a number of accident victims (take) to hospital. 9. (Take) charge of the laboratory he introduced new research techniques. 10. When (discover), the reserves of pure natural water seemed (promise) as the need for water supply has been growing for the past decade. 11. A dust storm was on the horizon, slowly (approach) the road. 12. He wouldn’t go, I suppose, unless (invite). 13. There was very little conversation between us, all of our energy (give) over to the difficult and steady assent. 14. And their lips (separate), he smiled without saying a word, while (strive) to throw a world of love into his looks. 15. Fritz not yet (return), his mother was beginning to be uneasy, when we heard him (shout) to us from a small distance. 16. Jean remained silent and motionless, his back (turn) towards the door, still (seat) on his chair from which he had not moved, and (hold) his breath in the darkness. 17. The night was almost, but not quite, dark, the moon (not rise) as yet, which made us wonder how we should be able to see the dancing.

Ex.5. TRANSLATE into English taking care of the Participles in different structures and functions, where possible.

1. Про графа ничего не говорили, и только близко знавшие его люди жалели, что он рано умер. 2. Собака подбежала ко мне и завиляла хвостом, как бы приветствуя меня. 3. Гимнаст выполнял упражнения с необычайной легкостью, которая достигается только постоянной тренировкой. 4. Ты застал отца за работой? – Нет, когда я пришел, я увидел, что он задремал в кресле с какими-то бумагами в руках. 5. По воскресеньям он обычно уезжал, сказав, что едет зарабатывать деньги на сборе помидоров. 6. Закончив письмо и вложив его в конверт, я оставил его незапечатанным. 7. Мы смотрели на детей, которые весело смеялись над шутками своего нового друга. 8. Моя бабушка, рассказавшая мне эту историю, проживает за городом. 9.
