500 ВС: The Feathered Toy That Flew

The Chinese flying top was the ancestor of the helicopter, and the toy was at least 2,000 years old when it reached Europe in the Middle Ages. It consisted of a stick with propeller blades - sometimes feathers - attached at one end. When the stick was rotated between the hands, the toy flew upwards. It was acting like an aircraft wing and propeller combined; by its turning motion it created an airflow and the whirling blades bit into the flow, generating lift. This is the principle that makes a helicopter fly.
