1970: The 'Jumbo' Arrives

Two developments above all have changed the face of passenger flying - the emergence of the 'jumbo jet' in 1970, and the entry into service of the first supersonic airliner, Concorde, which made its maiden flight in 1969.

In the 1960s the American Boeing company lost to Lockheed the contract for a large military transport plane. In their bid for the contract, Boeing had developed a powerful yet quiet variant of the jet engine, the turbo-fan. Boeing promptly turned the loss of the contract to advantage, and applied four of the- turbo-fans to a new-style airliner - the wide-bodied 390-seat Boeing 747, the first 'jumbo'. Economy is the hallmark of the 747, appropriate when fuel must be conserved in the face of repeated oil crises, and avoiding unnecessary atmospheric pollution. The passenger-carrying capacity - equal to the population of a small village, and increased since the aircraft's conception to 490 - means less traffic congestion in the skies and on the runways; though the arrival all at once of such large numbers of passengers strains airport terminal facilities.

The 747 is the largest civil airliner in service in the world; but Boeing is developing a 600-seater passenger plane, expected to be in airline service in 1985, and looks ahead beyond that to a 1,000-seat, double-decker 'super-jumbo' which will cross the Pacific in a single 'hop'.
