Crawler tractor and bulldozer
One of the basic machines used in road construction is a crawler tractor. It may be employed for many construction operations. A tractor is used for the transportation of construction equipment. Different kinds of equipment may be mounted on the tractor. Crawler tractors are generally powered by diesel engines. They may have different weight and power. Tractors which are used for road construction may have load lifting capacity from 5 to 20 tons.
Now a few words about bulldozers. Beside a crawler tractor there is a bulldozer. It consists of a curved blade (изогнутый отвал) which is mounted on the front of the tractor. The blade is fastened (крепится) to the tractor by means of two long beams. The bulldozer blade may be raised and lowered. It is wider than the tractor.
In order to (для того чтобы) dig a trench trenching machines are used. They dig trenches of 2 feet wide and 4 feet 6 inches deep. These machines are mounted on tracks. They have five forward digging speeds and one reverse.
