1. London is the capital of Great Britain, its political, economic, commercial center and the largest port of the country. It’s one of the greatest cities in the world and the largest city in Europe. Its population is about 9 million. London is one of the oldest and most interesting cities in the world. It lies in the South East of England on both banks of the river Thames. London is more than twenty centuries old. Romans founded it in place of small Celtic settlement and called it Londinium.

2. Traditionally it’s divided into several parts: the City, Westminster, the West End and the East End. They are very different from each other and seem to belong to different towns and epochs. The heart of London is the City, its financial and business center. It contains numerous banks, offices and firms as well as the Bank of England and the Stock Exchange. Few people live here, but over a million people come to the City to work.

3. The West End is the richest and most beautiful part of London. It is the symbol of wealth and luxury. The best hotels, shops, restaurants, clubs, and theatres are situated there. The East End is the poorest district of London. There are a lot of factories, work- shops and docks here. The main branches of industry are machine-building, ship-building, metal processing and others.

4. Trafalgar Square is the geographical center of London. It obtained its name in memory of Admiral Nelson’s victory in the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The tall Nelson’s Column stands in the middle of the square. On the north side of Trafalgar Square is the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery. Not far away is the British Museum - the biggest museum in London. It contains a priceless collection of ancient manuscripts, coins, sculptures and is famous for its library.

5. There are a lot of magnificent buildings in London. One of them is Buckingham palace, the royal residence. Westminster Abbey has the memorials of many famous citizens of Britain. This Gothic style church is more than nine hundred years old and it is the crowning and burial place of British monarchs. Londoners are also very proud of St. Paul’s Cathedral. Famous architect Sir Christophor Wren built this masterpiece in 1675-1711.

6. Near Westminster Abbey there are the Houses of Parliament, the seat of the British government. Its clock tower contains “Big Ben” – one of the largest clock in the world. The Tower of London is also one of the most interesting places in London. It was a fortress, a royal residence, a prison, now it is a museum. London attracts millions of tourists by its mysterious historical spirit and modern energetic rhythm. It is one of the most magnificent places in our planet.
