1. Сardiff is the capital and the largest city in Wales with population of 317,500 people. It is near the mouth of the river Taff, which flows into the English Channel. Its geographic features were influential in its development as the world's largest coal port, most notably its proximity and easy access to the coal fields of the south Wales valleys. The city is Wales' chief commercial centre, the base for many national cultural institutions, the Welsh national media, the most popular visitor destination in the country and the seat of the Welsh Government.

2. As the capital city of Wales, Cardiff is the main engine of growth in the Welsh economy. The economy of Cardiff makes up nearly 20% of Welsh GDP. Cardiff's port area – Tiger Bay –became the busiest port in the world and the world's most important coal port. Today, Cardiff is the principal finance and business services centre in Wales. Cardiff is the one of the most popular tourist destination cities in the United Kingdom.

3. Cardiff has many landmark buildings such as the Millennium Stadium, Pierhead Building and the National Assembly for Wales and the splendid neo-classical architectural ensemble of the Civic Centre with the City hall. Cardiff is also famous for Cardiff Castle, St David's Hall, Llandaff Cathedral, the Wales Millennium Centre. Cardiff Castle is a major tourist attraction in the city and is situated in the heart of the city centre, near the main shopping area of Queen Street and St. Mary's Street. The Castle has Roman foundation, medieval core and Victorian decoration. The National History Museum at St Fagans in Cardiff is a large open air museum. The Museum of Cardiff has a splendid collection of impressionist paintings.

4. Cardiff is home to four major institutions of higher education: Cardiff University, University of Glamorgan and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. The total number of higher education students in the city is around 43,900.

5. At first sight Cardiff seems too Victorian, too dignified. But the second glance will show you that it is a relaxed city with a fascinating cultural life. The New Theatre of Cardiff now houses the prestigious Welsh National Opera Company. St. David`s Hall proposes all kinds of music and entertainment. In Cardiff you can find modern shopping malls and Victorian shopping arcades, cafes, bistros and other places where you can taste local Brains beer. The spirit of this city is unique and mysterious, it mixes different epochs into a fairy tale.
