1. New York City isn’t the capital of USA and it isn’t the capital of New York State, but residents of the “Big Apple” call their city the capital of the globe. It is because New York is the home of the United Nations and the greatest investment market in the world. It is the largest and the most famous city in the USA and one of the most popular cities in the world. New York is a really cosmopolitan city. Some people consider it too busy and crowded but many people love it because of all its excitement, entertainment, and culture.

2. It is in the junction of the Hudson and East Rivers with New York Bay, an arm of the Atlantic Ocean. Its harbor is one of the largest of the world’s ports. New York is a city of islands. It consists of two islands: Manhatten and Staten, part of the third island (Long Islands) and part of the mainland. The total area of New York City is 319.8 square miles. It has five boroughs: the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhatten, Queens and Richmond.

3. Manhattan is the center of New York City. Near 1 million people live here, but over than 5 million come here to work from all parts of the city every day. The main street, Broadway, is also here. Wall Street is the financial heart of the city. The New York Stock exchange is located at Wall Street,11. The most important industries are manufacturing, printing, publishing, food, chemical and metal industries.

4. For the enthusiasts of art and cultural entertainment New York is a constant source of enjoyment. The cultural centre in the city is the Lincoln Centre for the performing Arts originated in the 1960s. There is a famous crossing Times Square. It is famous for Theatre district, there are more than thirty theaters there, and every evening they play their plays. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the most famous art museum in New York. It has great archeological and art collection from all over the world. It’s located in Central Park. There are a lot of famous neighborhoods on Manhattan. The Village is famous for some poets and writers, who wrote about it. SoHo is an enclave of artists. Harlem has a priceless musical heritage.

5. Most of New York’s skyscrapers are located on the island of Manhattan. There are such buildings as Art Deco Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, the first American sky-scraper and there were twin towers of the World Trade Center. One of the famous building in the world is the Statue of Liberty. The people of France presented it to Americans in 1886. About 12 million immigrants passed through New York when they came to America. When you come to New York by sea the first thing, which you will see it is the Statue of Liberty, America’s symbol of freedom.
