Oxford
My favourite place in the world is the city where I grew up – Oxford. It is in the south of central England and is built where two rivers meet, the Isis and the Cherwell. It is quite a large city, with an old historic centre and industrial and residential areas round the outside. Oxford is a long way from the sea but, although I love swimming and water sports, that is not a problem for me. We live near the river and often go boating. You can hire flat-bottomed boats called punts which you operate with a long pole. You have to be careful not to fall in (I have, sometimes) but it is so peaceful on the river and the scenery is really beautiful.
Oxford is an ancient city with some fascinating old buildings. Did you know Oxford was once the capital of England? Just for a few years, during the civil war in the 17th century, King Charles made it his capital. Oxford university is very old and is one of the best known in the world. Some of the college buildings are really stunning and if you have time it is well worth going on a tour of the colleges. As far as I'm concerned, the most exciting building is the Radcliffe Camera. It is round with a huge dome and it is really impressive – from the inside. Outside it looks quite ordinary, but inside it is fantastic. Apart from the university there are a lot of other interesting old buildings in Oxford. If you like museums, we have the Ashmolean, the oldest museum in England, with an amazingly varied collection, art as well as history. Most of the old buildings are in the city centre, so you can easily walk round them in a day.
Although the guidebooks will tell you mainly about the historical side of Oxford, I would not want you to think that it is only a place for ancient things and old people. Far from it! A city with so many students has plenty of entertainment. We have good discos and clubs, and because people come here from all over the world, we have a real variety of restaurants. In my experience most of them serve really great meals. Eating is one of my favourite hobbies! And Oxford is a shopper's delight too — there are new shopping developments right in the centre of town.
You really need to come for more than a day to get the most out of your visit. The countryside round Oxford is lovely, with rolling hills and picturesque little villages. If you have time, you should go and see the White Horse at Uffington. It was made more than 2,000 years ago. It is the shape of a horse cut into the side of a hill so that it shows up white. It is huge, you can see it for miles around.
But you know how much I love my city. It is not perfect I know, the traffic can be appalling and some of the industrial areas are, well, dreadful, but you can easily avoid the boring bits. I personally have found it impossible to be bored for long in Oxford. Try it yourself and see!
