South Korea is prepared to allow North Korea to examine units 3 and 4 at the Uljin nuclear power station so that Pyongyang can be satisfied as to the reliability of South Korea's light-water reactors. Interview

Interview with Nelson Mandela

A: The United Nations should be restructured so as to reflect the main forms of civilization in the world. And there should be no monopoly by the Western powers on the permanent seats at the Security Council. The developing countries are also saying that we must examine distribution of resources; it is hunger, poverty and disease that make people rebel. At the same time, we must not dismiss the Western powers' concerns — they carry the financial burden of the UN.

A: Totally untrue. What made apartheid a crime against humanity is that the racism was entrenched in the Constitution and the laws of our country. That was never the case in the United States. At least the Constitution prohibited outlawed racism. It is a vast difference. You do find racism, but there is a vast difference, no doubt.

A: In many meetings before the last elections I made it clear that I want to better the lives of our people by creating jobs and building houses and schools and hospitals, introducing electricity and clean water, constructing roads. But we warned that to carry out this program would take some years. In the last we have done far more than the Nationalist Party did in 45 years of its rule. But the people have forgotten that. They want houses. They want jobs. We go to them and remind them of our achievements.

I have gone to the private sector and they are helping now. But it requires a great deal of work on the ground, and patience and time. So we are working on it.

1.“My mate can be really thick sometimes. He stopped to get some fags and left the car open. He talked to the bird in the shop for about five minutes, and some guy nicked his stereo and two hundred quid from the car. Then he called the cops - but what can they do?”

2.“Bob is a great guy. He never blows his stack. He hardly ever flies off his handle. Well, of course, he is actually getting on, too. But he always knows how to make up for the lost time by taking it easy. He gets up early, works out, and turns in early. He knows how to get away with things. Bob’s got it made. This is it for him. He is a cool cat.”

3. That guy, Fred, is a real top banana. The guy is out to lunch. He better be careful because real soon he's going to find himself eating humble pie. His ideas are OK on the surface but when you start to look at them you realize that they are really Swiss cheese. He always expects us to fill in the holes and make him look good. We get everything he gives us done to a T, but he takes all the credit. It would be nice if, for once, he would give us time to develop something challenging that we can really sink our teeth into. At least it would be nice to get credit for all that we do to make him and our organization look good, but I doubt that will happen; he always wants the whole enchilada for himself.

He is always dangling the carrot of private compliments in our faces, but we know they are insincere. He must think we are bunch of cream puffs. But someday, he is going to get his pie in the face. He'll be in a real stew and we won't be there to clean it up. Soon... he'll get his just desserts . Because he can't have the cake and eat it too.

4.The part that got me was a lady sitting next to me that cried all through the goddam picture. The phonier it got, the more she cried. You'd have thought she did it because she was kind-hearted as hell, but I was sitting right next to her, and she wasn't. She had this little kid with her that was bored as hell and had to go to the bathroom, but she wouldn't take him. She kept telling him to sit still and behave himself. She was about as kind-hearted as a goddam wolf. You take somebody that cries their goddam eyes out over phoney stuff in the movies, and nine times out often they are теап bastards at heart. I'm not kidding.

(John Warnock).

A PAtCH транформировалось в Apache.

  4. Apples Macintosh -

News in Brief 5 (World Events)

  1. Taxes and social-security contributions consumed a record 42.4% of the European Union's GDP last year, said the EU's statistical agency, Eurostat. Three Nordic countries imposed the heaviest burdens on their economies, with Sweden taking 55.2%. Ireland, Spain and Britain taxed less than 36%.

  2. The new president of Nagorno-Karabakh, the disputed territory held by Armenia against the wishes of Azerbaijan, rejects international proposals for returning the area to Azerbaijan's sovereignty while giving its ethnic Armenian population autonomy.

  3. Bombs again exploded in Ben-Yehuda, the main pedestrian shopping! street in central Jerusalem. Early reports said that six people were killed, including the suicide-bombers, and more than 100 were wounded.

  4. Abassi Madani, leader of Algeria's banned Islamic party who recently freed from six years' imprisonment, was put under house arrest for calling, in a letter to the UN, for an end to bloodshed and the opening of dialogue.

  5. Plans for a U N rapid-deployment force took a step forward when Kofi Annan, the secretary-general, officially inaugurated the brigade staff. Seven countries have so far committed troops to the force, which became to be operational in 1999.

  6. Despite promises that he would tackle corruption in Kenya, its President failed to persuade the IMF to resume lending. But the Kenyan shilling, which fell by nearly 20% when the IMF suspended a

$220m loan last month, steadied.

  1. The Comoros government said it had invaded the island of Anjouan, which last month set up its own administration. It was seeking independence — or a return to French rule.

  2. Joseph Kennedy, the son of Robert Kennedy, gave up his campaign to be governor of Massachusetts.

  3. Inter-party arguments almost prevented the first meeting of Mexico's newly elected Congress, where the mighty PRI1 no longer — after 68 years — has an overall majority. In the end it did meet, to hear President Fox both welcome the jubilant parties of opposition and warn them not to put Mexico's economic rehabilitation at risk.

  4. In Colombia's guerrilla-ridden province of Antioquia, the governor appointed army and police officers to replace four mayors kidnapped to sabotage next month's elections. Many Colombians had more commonplace worries: the continuing recession, which led to a nationwide day of strikes and protests.
