In everyday speech we use words in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening, and in writing we often use a.m. (short for Latin ante meridiem “before noon”) and p.m. (short for Latin post meridiem “after noon”).

Breakfast is served between 7.00 a.m. and 9.30 a.m.

We do not usually use the twenty-four hour clock unless we are talking about plane or train timetables or itineraries:

The train leaves at 19.20.

To ask somebody what the time is, you say:

Can you tell me the time, please? (formal) What’s the time?

What time is it?

Have you got the time?

IV. What time is it?

a) Say in words:

9.30, 7.10, 5.00, 10.20, 4.05, 5.45, 11.15, 2.34, 3.52, 8.03, 2.11.

b) Write in figures:

a quarter past three, half past five, a quarter to six, twenty-five to nine, twenty to eleven, ten to four, five to nine, twenty-three minutes to six, twenty-five to two, five past three, three sharp.

V. FREQUENCY ADVERBS ( = how often)

never rarely sometimes often usually always

-------------•-----------•-----------•----------•-----------•----→

Note: Adverbs of frequency go before the main verb with the exception of the verb ”to be”. When a predicate has several parts, the most common position is after the first auxiliary verb:

She never comes to work on time.

She is often late.

This work will never be finished.

Sometimes and often can go at the beginning or end of the sentence:

Sometimes I play tennis.

They go to the Zoo quite often.
