1. Alex Vandervoort was the second to speak. He was not going to use a prepared text. "I am not going to take up much of your time. Most of you know me well, as a man and as a banker." Alex began. "You also know that as a banker I am tough. Proof of this exists in financing I've conducted for FMA, all of it profitable, none involving loss. Now I am going to state my beliefs. A belief of my own is that civilazation is changing quickly. What we are witnessing is a social revolution of conscience and behaviour. Some people do not like this revolution. But like it or not, it's here; it exists; it will not reverse itself or go away. The driving force behind what is happening is the determination of people to improve the quality of life, to stop pollution of our environment, to preserve what is left of resources of all kinds. It will require new standards on the part of industry and business. So that the name of the game is corporate social responsibility". Alex made a pause.

2. Alex Vandervoort looked round the boardroom table to meet the eyes of each board member. "I am sure we will never achieve business success by ignoring change. We shall certainly profit by listening and adapting now. There are fourteen thousand banks in the United States with enormous fiscal power in extending loans. When the loans are to industry and business it involves responsibility on our part. If the loan is to a factory, will it pollute? When the loan is for the development of a new product, will it be safe? Major banks are beginning to ask these questions — an example which FMA will be wise to emulate. For just as leadership in any enterprise can produce strong dividends, so leadership in banking will prove rewarding, too. And it's better to do it freely, now."
-

In what way will FMA profit?

3. "In the next couple of minutes I am going to talk about other areas in which this bank should accept responsibility. I believe, with Ben Rosselli, that we should share in improving the life of this city and state. An immediate means is the financing of low-rental housing. Of course, I realize that housing mortgages are not a highly profit area. Yet there are ways to achieve that involvement with excellent profits, too. Traditionally, funds for home mortgages come from savings deposits because mortgages are long-term investments while savings are also stable and long-term. We shall gain profitability by volume. Thus we shall attain a threefold objective — profit, fiscal stability, and a major social contribution."
-
What is Alex going to talk about in the next couple of minutes?
-
What does he propose to do?

Will the bank gain profitability by volume?

4. Alex paused, took a step from the table, then returned." I am going to elaborate on this point a bit more. Only a few years ago large commercial banks like ourselves ignored consumer business including small savings. Savings and loan associations seized the opportunity, so now they are a main competitor. I believe, that within a decade consumer business will exceed commercial deposits everywhere. It will become the major money force. In view of the fact I am going to advise to open nine new branches in suburban areas through the state, reorganize FMA's structure to improve our efficiency. In the end I am going to say the following: Of course, industrial loans and commercial business will remain pillars of our activity, but not the only pillars. The founder of this bank established it to serve those of modest means. A massive and immediate growth in small savings will honour those origins, enhance our fiscal strength and — in the climate of the times — advance the public good, which is our own." The Board members applauded as Alex sat down.
