1. Издательское дело и журналистика предоставляет блестящие карьерные возможности гуманитариям, а также людям, которые любят читать, думать и обсуждать свои идеи. Такие люди занимают большинство вакансий в редакциях крупных изданий, которые сосредоточены преимущественно в Нью-Йорке. Дополнительные возможности для людей с техническим образованием и креативными способностями дает Сеть. Необходимо обратить внимание на то, что в настоящее время усиливается тенденция к резкому сокращению редакционных штатов. Поэтому зачастую требуется совмещение функций, свойственных специалистам разных профессий.
2. Обязанности редакторов значительно изменились. Теперь им приходится обращать внимание и на предпочтения читателей, и на тенденции развития рынка и на другие требования времени. В крупных изданиях редакторы ведают определенными отделами: внутренней политики, международной жизни, финансовых новостей, искусства, новинок литературы и т.п.
