• “Monograph” isn’t a term heard quite so often these days, but that doesn’t mean that this kind of book is no longer crucial (решающий, ключевой) to learning and research.
• For three decades the death of the monograph has been repeatedly proclaimed (to proclaim – сообщать, объявлять), but the monograph may have merely been napping (to nap – дремать).
• Digital technologies are transforming the means of producing and disseminating the monograph, giving new life, or its cyber-equivalent, to works too specialized to sustain (поддерживать) traditional printing methods.

Газета "USA Today" стала первой, кто стал излагать читателям информацию в упрощенном виде. Ее страницы заполнили яркие фотографии и доступная информация в графическом виде. Ее стали продавать в автоматах, похожих на телевизоры. Благодаря такой стратегии рейтинг этой ежедневной газеты, соединяющей в себе черты телевидения, газеты и комикса, немедленно взлетел вверх. Но одновременно это вызвало резкое неприятие со стороны серьезного читателя.
2. Образы своенравных, но талантливых репортеров и гудящих, словно улей, редакционных помещений уходят в прошлое. На смену им приходит в большей степени корпоративный стиль работы, все более зависящий от цифровых технологий.
В настоящее время все чаще случается, что главный редактор изучает в своем кабинете обзоры рынка, бюджетные планы и штатное расписание, чтобы эффективнее использовать резервы. Корреспондент часто отбирает текущие события с помощью электронных информационных изданий.
Меняется и читательская база. Вместо жителей небольшого городка, для которых важны лишь местные новости, журналист, пишущий для он-лайновых изданий, обращается к громадной глобальной аудитории. Поэтому круг тем значительно расширяется.
