I. Read and translate the following text.
Olympic Flame May Burn on Everest
China wants to carry the Olympic torch to the peak of Everest before the 2008 Games and broadcast the event live. Olympic organizers said yesterday that a research group was assessing the difficulties of such an enterprise. "It depends on the weather at the time and on when it will happen," said Liu Jingmin, the executive vice-president of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games and the deputy mayor of Beijing. Chinese mountaineers have scaled Everest, known in China as Qomolangma, more than 10 times and have plenty of experience.
"There is no doubt we can make it despite the difficulties. We haven't decided how to do it," said Ma Xinxiang, the head of the China national mountaineering team. China took a ceremonial flame to the top of Everest, the peak of which straddles the China-Nepal border, in a sports competition among China's ethnic minorities in 1999. That torch was fitted with a special oxygen tank to keep it burning in the thin air and an igniter for when winds blew out the flame. For the Olympics, mountaineers could use similar technology. The torch may be not alight for the entire climb, but could be ignited at a point that has yet to be decided, Mr. Ma said.
The flame would be carried up the southern slope of the mountain and then down along the northern slope in the world's highest relay race. Organizers would select about 80 climbers at the peak of their performance, aged between 18 and 23, who would undergo specialized training for several years. A rehearsal is planned for
2007. China is scheduled to submit a route plan for the relay to the International Olympic Committee by the end of 2006. The relay would end in a new 100,000-seat stadium on the outskirts of- the Chinese capital. The peak of Everest is put at 20,035ft (6,107m) but that may have changed by the time the relay takes place.

A team of Chinese surveyors reached the summit last weekend with the goal of remeasuring the world's highest mountain amid controversy over its exact height: advances in technology have resulted in an array of calculations. The melting of glaciers and snow has raised questions over whether the mountain is lower than early surveys showed.
Whatever the height, Chinese officials are confident the torch can reach the top. "Going up may not be too complicated, but filming the whole thing will be very complex," Mr. Liu said.
In 2003 China's state-run broadcaster showed live footage of climbers reaching the peak using a portable microwave transmitter to send a signal to a satellite ground station. The cost of transporting the gear as far as the middle reaches on yaks was 200,000 Yuan (Ј13,000). Mr. Liu said that no decision had been made about who would carry the torch up the mountain, although most torch bearers in the past have been locals. The first surveyors who reached the summit last week were all Tibetans. Chinese Olympic organizers harbour another ambition that rivals the Everest plan. They want the flame to be carried through Taiwan, regarded by Beijing as a rebellious province to be recovered by force if necessary. Taiwan competes separately from China under the name Chinese Taipei.
