second half of the 2nd millenium B.C. - 1st millenium B.C. was moral education, i.e. respect to the elders, justice, politeness, bravery.

The ideological essence of the Far East civilization in Ancient China was confucianism, developed from the teachings of the Chinese philosopher Confucius (Kǒng Fūzǐ, or “Master Kong”, 551-479 B.C.). The contents of the education consisted of the synthesis of four disciplines: morality, language, politics and literature.

5. Pedagogy in Middle Ages. Problems of education were developed by philosophers-theologians whose pedagogical ideas had a religious touch and were permeated by dogma.

Stage II. Formation of pedagogy as science

1.Pedagogy of the Renaissance. Sir Thomas More and Tommaso Campanella put forward the problem of the necessity of an allround development of the personality and of the close connection between the education, upbringing and productive work.

Their followers – Vittorino da Feltre, Desiderius Erasmus, Francois Rabelais, Michel Montaigne put forward a lot of pedagogical ideas progressive for their time: the humane attitude to children, liberation of the personality from the feudal oppression and religious asceticism.

2.Pedagogy of the 17th century. The English philosopher and scientist Fransis Bacon (1651-1626) was the first to suggest allocating pedagogy from the system of philosophical knowledge in a separate discipline.

The outstanding Czech educator Jan Amos Komenský created a consistent pedagogical system, progressive in its contents and still up to date.

3.Pedagogy of the 18th century. In his work “Some Thoughts Concerning Education” the English social philosopher and scientist John Locke likened the child to “a blank slate”, giving great value to psychological bases of education, and also moral development of the person.

The ideas of “natural education”, child-centered approach and natural perfection characterize the works of the well-known French writer and educator Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

4.Pedagogy of the 19th century. Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi – the Swiss pedagogue, the founder of the didactics of primary education, his idea of developing teaching/training is a great discovery. In his

21

practical pedagogical activity he united the education and upbringing of children with the organization of their feasible work.

An appreciable part in the development of the pedagogical bases of education was played by Johann Friedrich Herbart though partially his ideas bore a conservative character.

The German educator Adolph Diesterweg developed the pedagogical theory from the progressive-democratic point of view. The ideas about the activation of the educational activity of the pupils, the intensification of their independent work also belong to him.

5. The development of pedagogy in Russia. There is data that the first school in Russia was opened in 1030 in Novgorod for 300 children. Symeon Polotsky's activities in the field of pedagogy were great and fruitful. In 1664 he opened a school of Slavic, Greek and Latin languages at Spassky monastery in Moscow. Symeon Polotsky also made the project of Slavic Greek Latin Academy which was opened in 1687 and considerably expanded the higher education in the Russian state.

The great contribution to the development of the Russian pedagogical thought was made by M.V. Lomonosov (1711-1765). He wrote a number of educational books: "Rhetoric" (1748), “Russian Grammar” (1755), etc. A significant trace in the Russian pedagogy was left by N.I.Novikov (1744-1818). He published the first magazine in Russia “Children's reading for heart and reason”.

Some original pedagogical ideas were put forward by L.N. Tolstoy (18 28-1910). He paid a lot of attention to the development of creative independence in children, aspired to implement the theory of “natural education”, created a textbook, “Alphabet”, for primary school.

K.D. Ushinsky (1824-1870) is by right known as the founder of scientific pedagogy in Russia, the creation of integral didactic system belongs to him.

6. The pedagogy of the 20th century in the USSR and Russia had the following features: 1) the foundation of the education were labour schools based on principles of polytechnics and industrialization; 2) the active formation of children's collective and the creative purposeful personality is carried out.

These ideas were developed in the works of practically all great scientists-teachers of that time, among whom: P.P. Blonsky (18841941) – the author of the first textbook on pedagogy; A.S. Makarenko

22

(1888-1939) connected all his scientific activities with educational practice, his pedagogical discoveries lay the basis for the development of social pedagogy; V.A. Sukhomlynsky (1918-1970) is the most prominent educator of the 20th century, his pedagogical works are translated into 40 foreign languages, he considered practically all the aspects of the theory and practice of upbringing, didactics and school education.

III.Modern stage of the development of pedagogy

3.1.The modern foreign pedagogy has 5 basic paradigms:

1. Traditionalist. Its basic purpose is to give knowledge at any

cost.

2.Technocratic-pragmatic. Its main purpose is to give the student the knowledge and skills which will be useful and necessary in the life and professional work of the person in a modern society.

3.Behavioural. Its overall objective is to generate the correct forms of social behaviour of people.

4.Humanistic. The main objective of the pedagogical process is to promote the development of the abilities of the person, the development of his/her personality, spiritual growth, moral and selfimprovement, self-realization.

5.Theological. The basic tendency of the pedagogical process is the development of the religious feelings and moral standards of the person.

3.2.Modern domestic researchers in the field of pedagogy.

At the end of the 20th century a big group of teachers-innovators: V.F. Shatalov, E.I. Ilyin, S.N. Lysenkova, Sh. Amonashvili, I.P. Volkov, V.V. Krayevsky, F.A. Fradkin, etc. appeared on the arena of the social and pedagogical life. The motto of the advanced pedagogical minds became “Creativity of the teacher means creativity of the pupil”.

3.6. Summary of theme 3: the social function of pedagogy

Pedagogy studies a special kind of activity aimed at fulfilling the ever-lasting function of the human society: to transfer the saved up social experience to new generations.

In the law of the Russian Federation “On education” dating from 10.07.1992 it is written down, that education is a “purposeful process of upbringing and training in interests of the person, the society and the state”.

Universal values lie in the basis of the ideals of education developed by modern pedagogy.

The hereditary and congenital peculiarities, the factors of the environment, the personal role in self-development and selfimprovement render a big influence on socialization of the person.

I. The role of the society and the state consists in the upbringing of the young generation, in its familiarizing with the universal values, its socialization:

1.Upbringing is a social phenomenon. Inherently upbringing is the preparation of new generations for life, the adaptation of children, youth and adults to the conditions of existence and to the perfection of these conditions.

2.The social function of the education consists in the recognition of all spheres of the life of the child, in socialization of the child

27

moving from one group to another, getting in different systems of social relations.

3.The society does not stay the same and is constantly developing, education too is a developing phenomenon. It has a historical character, and during the various historical periods of its tasks, contents and methods were different, they sometimes varied greatly from epoch to epoch.

4.The most defining influence on the character of upbringing is rendered by the state system, the government, the class in power.

5.The education cannot be presented only as the relationship between the tutor and the pupil. It is organized for the life, its continuation, i.e. the future, practically all the social, economic and political structures are involved in it.

The main principles of modern socialization in the Russian society:

1.The connection of education with the concrete conditions of a state policy (in conditions of market economy).

2.The priority of the educational sphere, the secular character of education, co-education, a combination of collective, group and individual forms of educational process.

3.Professional self-determination of the young in view of social demands.

4.The polytypic nature of educational institutions.

5.The democratic character of the education system, the choice of the type of an educational institution.

II. Interest of every person in obtaining education.

The state and the society define the requirements to the formation of the personality of the young generation, to solving the social problems of education. However it is social institutions and the person himself that act as immediate educators.

There comes a moment when a young person reflects on the meaning of life, on his future occupation. He questions himself what to do in his life, determines the way to achieve it. His self-improvement (self-education) is defined by the level of his previous education. The person is interested in his own self-realization.
