Unit 3.Charging system and its elements Text a battery

It’s helpful to think of the battery as a place to store electricity. It actually stores chemicals, not electricity, but the former idea is too well established to shake off. For this reason, batteries are often called storage batteries or storage cells.

However, batteries depend on a chemical reaction to produce electricity, as described below. This principle was discovered by Alessandro Volta in the late 1700s. The term is derived from his name.

In Volta’s battery, two dissimilar metals are suspended in a salt or acid solution, called electrolyte. The electrolyte solution reacts with one of the metals more than the other one. The more active metal loses electrons and becomes positively charged. The less active metal collects electrons and becomes negatively charged. The amount of positive or negative charge is called potential. The difference in potential between the unlike charges creates a pressure that causes current to flow whenever a path is provided, such as an electrical load wired to the positive and negative terminals of the battery.
