Personal pronouns (Subject pronouns)

Personal pronouns in the Nominative Case are used as the subject of the sentence.

The pronoun it may be used as:

1) a subject in impersonal sentences;

2) the equivalent of demonstrative pronouns;

3) the introductory word.

Subject pronouns (nominative case)

Singular Plural

I - я

you - ти

he - він

she - вона

it - воно (для неживих предметів)

we - ми

you - ви

they - вони

Tony isn’t at home  He is at work.

Diana hasn’t got a motorbike.  She has got a car.

Computers aren’t cheap.  They are expensive.

  • It is used:

  • time It’s 2 o’clock

  • days of the week It’s Monday today

  • weather It’s sunny

  • distance It’s 4 killometres the town centre.

Exercise 1

Fill in I. You, he, she, it, we or they.

Example: ______________’re hungry. – You’re hungry

Exercise 3

Change the italicized words into I, you, he, she, it, we, they.

1. The teacher is helping the students to translate the article. 2. Mother will send Mary to buy the tickets. 3. The man gave the books to the boy. 4. My friend is going to give this book to his wife. 5. This book is not suitable for young children. 6. Helen worked hard at history.

Possessive pronouns are used before nouns in the function of an attribute.

What’s your name?

Alex has got his camera.

Anna has got her Walkman.

These are our suitcases.

Mind the following

Julia and her brother.

(her brother – брат Джулії).

Tony and his grandmother.

(his grandmother – бабуся Тоні).

Exercise 1

Change subject pronouns into possessive pronouns (I – me, you – your …)

Example: My (I) first name is Mary.

____________ (I) family name is Adams. What about you? What’s __________ (you) first name? And what’s ___________ (you) family name? I am married. You can see __________ (I) husband in the picture. ____________ (he) name is Arthur. Exercise 2

Use the right form of the pronouns.
