The Participle Constructions

the Objective

Exercise 1

Translate into Ukrainian.

  1. Everybody looked at the dancing girl.

  2. The man playing the piano is Kate’s uncle.

  3. Entering the room, she turned on the light.

  4. The little plump woman standing at the window is my grandmother.

  5. Coming to the theatre, she saw that the performance had already begun.

  6. I don’t know the girl sitting in the corner.

  7. Knowing English well, he translated the text without a dictionary.

  8. She went into the room leaving the door open.

  9. Having finished the translation, he typed it.

  10. The student being asked now is Petrenko.

Exercise 2

Write Participles of the following verbs.

a) Perfect Participle Active (to begin – having begun)

to translate, to finish, to take, to tell, to live, to leave, to buy, to say, to do, to break, to lose, to eat, to meet, to read.

b) Present Participle Passive (to build – being built)

to invite, to examine, to check, to prepare, to show, to give, to discuss, to type, to write.

Exercise 3

Transform these sentences according to the models.

a) Model: The boy who is standing at the window is my brother.

The boy standing at the window is my brother.

  1. Do you know the name of the man who is talking to Mr. Brown?

  2. She looked at the plane which was disappearing in the clouds.

  3. The woman who is speaking now is our secretary.

  4. The problem which is being discussed now is very important.

  5. I picked up the letter which was lying on the floor.

  6. The house which is being built in our street is a new theatre.

  7. We read the article which was written in English.

b) Model: When he was asking me about it, he smiled.

(When) asking me about it he smiled.

  1. When I heard the news, I phoned Peter.

  2. When I saw him, I felt happy.

  3. Be careful when you are crossing a street.

  4. When you are copying English texts, pay attention to the article.

  5. When she heard her name, she turned round.

  6. When she spoke to Peter, she asked his advice.

  7. When they arrived at the airport, they saw their friends there.

c) Model: As she said so she went out of the room.

Saying so she went out of the room.

  1. As she felt tired she sat down in the arm-chair.

  2. As I had lost the key, I couldn’t open the door.

  3. As he failed to hit the ball he got angry.

  4. Since he needed a shelter for the night, Peter decided to go to the neighbours’ house.

  5. As he had lived in the town all his life he knew it very well.

Exercise 4

Choose the right form of Participle.

  1. The girl (speaking, spoken) on the phone is our secretary. Everything (speaking, spoken) here is quite right.

  2. The house (surrounding, surrounded) by tall trees is very beautiful. The wall (surrounding, surrounded) the house was very high.

  3. The girl (washing, washed) the floor is my sister. The floor (washing, washed) by Helen looked very clean.

  4. Who is that man (signing, signed) the documents? The documents (signing, signed) by businessmen today are very important.

  5. The book (writing, written) by this scientist is very interesting. Translate the words (writing, written) here.

  6. The (losing, lost) book was found at last.

  7. (Going, gone) along the street, I met Mary and Ann.

  8. Name some places (visiting, visited) by you last year.

  9. She was reading the book (buying, bought) the day before.

  10. Here is the letter (receiving, received) by me yesterday.

  11. “How do you like the film?” he asked, (turning, turned) towards me.

  12. I think that the man (standing, stood) there is your brother.

Exercise 5

Put the verb in brackets into Present Participle or Perfect Participle.

  1. (to prepare) the contract, he was thinking hard.

  2. (to prepare) the contract, he went home.

  3. (to sell) fruit, he looked back from time to time, hoping to see his friends.

  4. (to sell) all the fruit, he went to see his friends.

  5. (to eat) all the potatoes, she drank a cup of tea.

Exercise 6

Put the verb in brackets into the required form of the Participle.

  1. (to wait) for some time in the hall, he was invited into the dining-room.

  2. (to wait) in the hall, the thought over the problem he was planning to discuss with the President.

  3. (to phone) the agency, he left (to say) he would be back in two hours.

  4. (to write) in very bad hand-writing, the letter was difficult to read.

Exercise 7

Translate the sentences using the required form of Participle.

  1. Я не знаю дівчину, яка сидить у кутку.

Exercise 8

Translate into Ukrainian paying attention to the use of the Nominative Absolute Participial Construction.

  1. The weather being fine, they went for a walk.

  2. It being very late, they stayed at home.

  3. There being little time left, they had to hurry.

  4. This being so, we shall have to return.

  5. It being difficult to settle the matter, we decided to meet again on the following day.

  6. It being Saturday, everyone went out of town.

  7. This being done, they left for home.

  8. The treaty having been signed, trade was at once resumed.

  9. His story told, he leaned back and sighed.

  10. He was standing there silent, a bitter smile curling his lips.

  11. Jack sat silent, his long legs stretched out.

  12. He slowly and carefully spread the paper on the desk, with Lowell closely watching.

  13. She sat on the steps, with her arms crossed upon her knees.

  14. Then, with her heart beating fast, she went up and rang the bell.

Exercise 9

Translate into English, using the Nominative Absolute Participial Construction.

  1. Оскільки було дуже пізно, збори були закриті.

  2. Якщо погода дозволить, ми підемо до парку.

  4. Оскільки швидко темніло, вона поспішила додому.

  10. Було дуже темно, оскільки на небі не було жодної зірочки.
