7. Respond to the following questions.

  1. Peter came to Kyiv on the 1st of November. Now it is the 1st of December. How long has he been staying in Kyiv?

  2. They began travelling about the city at 9 o’clock in the morning. Now it is 5 o’clock in the afternoon. How long have they been travelling about the city?

  3. You came to the institute at a quarter to two, now it is two sharp. How long have you been waiting for the beginning of the lesson?

  4. She began cooking dinner at 10 a.m. Now it is 11 a.m. How long has she been cooking it?

  5. You began studying English in September. It is January now. How long have you been studying English?

8. Translate into English.

Present perfect continuous and present perfect simple

Present Perfect Simple

I’ve been cleaning my car.

When we use the present perfect continuous, the action may be finished or not finished.

2. We use the present perfect continuous to talk about how long something has been in progress.

I’ve been walking all morning.

How long have you been having driving

lessons?

3. We use the present perfect continuous for situations which are more temporary.

He’s been living there for just a few weeks.

I’ve cleaned my car.

We use the present perfect simple when the action is finished.

We use the present perfect simple to talk about what has been achieved in a period of time.

I’ve walked six kilometres so far this morning

How many driving lessons have you had?

We use the present perfect simple for situations which are more permanent.

He has always lived there.

4. Sometimes there is only a small difference in meaning between the two forms.

I’ve been living / I’ve lived in this flat for ten years.

How long has she been working / has she worked for the company?

1. Choose the correct form.

  1. They’ve been repairing / They’ve repaired the road all this week, but they haven’t finished it yet.

  2. I’m very sorry, but I’ve been breaking / I’ve broken this chair.

2. In this exercise you have to read the situation and then write two sentences, one with the present perfect simple and one with the present perfect continuous.
