XXIII. Translate from Ukrainian into English using the Passive Voice:

  1. Перша частина цієї книги друкується в Києві, а другу частину надрукують у Харкові.

  2. Коли був збудований цей вокзал?

  3. У нашому місті зараз будується новий театр.

  4. Наш завод обладнаний сучасними машинами.

  5. Його запитали, де він працює.

Conditional sentences (II, III)

Conditional sentences II (Present), III (Past) represents an action not as a real act but as something that would take place under certain conditions, something desirable, necessary or unreal, unrealizable.

Conditional sentences (II) (Present, Future)

If the weather were fine, we should play outside.

(Якщо б погода була б добра (сьогодні, завтра), ми б грали на свіжому повітрі).

If you rang me up, I should tell you something.

(Якщо б ти мені подзвонив (сьогодні, завтра), я б тобі дещо розповів).

Exercise 3

Transform the following sentences, using Conditionals (II).

Example: If Peter works hard, he will pass his examination. – If Peter worked hard, he would pass his examination.

1. If the weather is warm, we shall bathe (swim) in the river. 2. If there is much snow in January, they will go skiing every day. 3. If the rain stops, the girls will go for a walk. 4. If he is not very busy, she will join us.

Exercise 4

Paraphrase the sentences as in the example.

Example: Nick doesn’t know English, so I don’t speak English with him. – If Nick knew English, I should speak English with him.
