The complex subject

Complex Subject consists of a noun in the Common Case or a personal pronoun in the Nominative Case and the infinitive.

The nominal part of the complex may denote both the subject and the object of the action expressed by infinitive.

E.g. He is expected to come back tonight.

Очікують, що він повернеться сьогодні ввечері.

She is said to have checked out.

Кажуть, що вона вже виїхала з готелю.

1) Complex Subject is used with verbs in Passive Voice: to hear; to see; to find; to know; to report; to expect; to consider; to believe; to say; to suppose.

E.g. He is said to prefer swimming.

Кажуть, що він надає перевагу плаванню.

The conference is believed to take place in Kiev.

Вважають, що конференція відбудеться в Києві.

2) Complex Subject is used with verbs in Active Voice: to seem, to appear, to prove, to happen, to turn out.

E.g. He seemed to be thinking about something.

Здавалося, що він про щось думає.

The young man turned out to be an excellent football player.

Молодий чоловік виявився пречудовим футбольним гравцем.

3) Complex Subject is used with expressions to be likely, to be unlikely, to be sure, to certain.

E.g. Their plans are likely to change in the future.

Їх плани, імовірно, в майбутньому зміняться.

He is sure to ring you up.

Він, напевно, зателефонує вам.

Exercise 1

Translate from English into Ukrainian.

1. He is said to be a good translator. 2. Mary was known to be honest and hard-working girl. 3. The number of the unemployed is reported to be increasing with every year. 4. Many new textbooks are expected to be very published soon. 5. These devices are considered to be very effective. 6. You are supposed to graduate in four years. 7. His office turned out to be in one of the back streets. 8. He appeared to be an ideal man. 9. You can easily get in through the window if the door happens to be locked. 10. Money just doesn’t happen to interest me. 11. You appear to have found in him something that I have missed. 12. This work seems to take much time. 13. These two young people are sure to be very good friends. 14. The article is likely to appear in the next issue of the journal. 15. He is sure to tell me all about this even if I don’t ask him. 16. She is not likely to change her opinion. 17. Don’t worry: everything is sure to turn out all right.

Exercise 2

Transform the sentences using Complex Subject instead of Complex Object.

Model I saw her read the letter. – She was seen to read the letter.

1. We heard her sing a folk song. 2. I saw him put his coat on. 3. They heard the clock strike nine. 4. We saw the rider disappear in the distance. 5. We saw the plane take off. 6. They expected him to return in a fortnight. 7. Everybody supposed him to be a foreigner. 8. Everybody considered him to be a great man. 9. I expect the telegram to be sent tomorrow.

Exercise 3

Transform the following complex sentences into simple ones using Complex Subject.

Model: We heard that a car stopped outside the door.

A car was heard to stop outside the door.

It is believed that the poem was written by Byron.

The poem is believed to have been written by Byron.

It appeared that they had lost the way.

They appeared to have lost the way.

1. People consider the climate there to be very healthful. 2. It is expected that the performance will be a success. 3. It is said that the book is popular with both old and young. 4. It is said that this man was very handsome in his youth. 5. It is believed that she knows several foreign languages. 6. It is said that the film is very interesting. 7. It is said that Kate is preparing for the entrance examinations. 8. It is reported that the delegation arrived in Paris on the 10th of September. 9. It is reported that our spaceship has reached the moon. 10. It is expected that he will arrive on Monday. 11. It was supposed that the weather would be fine in April. 12. It is expected that he will buy a car. 13. It seems they know all about it. 14. It seemed that the discussion was coming to an end. 15. It turned out that my prediction was correct. 16. It seems that they live in the same house. 17. It seems that she is listening. 18. It proved that you were right.

Exercise 4
