2. Use

a) We can use shall / will to predict the future

This time next year I’ll be in the USA.

Tom won’t pass his examination. He hasn’t done any work for it.

When we predict the future, we often use shall / will with the following verbs and expressions:

think expect believe be sure be afraid

hope, probably, perhaps.

I expect they’ll be here at around 10 o’clock tomorrow morning.

Perhaps I’ll see you tomorrow.

b) We also use will when we decide to do something at the moment of speaking.

Would you like something to drink? – Oh, thank you. I’ll have some orange juice.

I’m going shopping. – Oh, are you?

I’ll come with you, then. I need to get some things.

Exercises

1. Jack is 18 years old now. What will he be like in 10 years from now? How will his life be different then? Complete what Jack says using shall / shan’t.(This usage is dated in American English. It would be seen as quaint, odd! “Shan’t” is especially old-fashioned and never used unless the intended usage is to evoke a bygone time period. “Shall” would be seen as less odd but still as somewhat of an affectation.)

Example: I hope I shall have a job in 10 years time.

  1. I hope I / have a good car.

  2. Perhaps I / have a good job.

  3. I probably / not / be very rich.

  4. I / not/ look the same as I do now.

  5. I think I / be married.

  6. I / probably/ have children.
