All metals are divided into ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Ferrous metals are metals and alloys the main component of which is 1____ . The classification of fer-

rous metals 2____ iron, steel and its alloys. Metals in general, and especially fer-

rous metals are of great importance in various constructions. Thousands of miles of railway track form an intricate network of steel over the world. Machine tools and machinery, steamships and locomotives, automobiles and aeroplanes, rails and bridges are but a few of the many products turned out by the steel industry.

3___ are metals and 4____ the main component of which is not iron but some other element such as copper, aluminium and others. Copper, aluminium and some other metals are referred to as non-ferrous metals.

  1. alloys c) includes

  2. iron d) non-ferrous

1_______ and it must be transmitted to other parts of the country. 2________?

Thick wires carry electric power over long distances. The wires are not always ma-

de of copper, often they are made of other metals. 3________. A cable consists of a number of wires put together and a pair consists of two insulated conductors for-

ming a metallic circuit. 4_______ and a cable is the main part of this long transmi-

ssion line.

  1. A number of wires put together form one thick cable

  2. Thus the basic transmission element of communications is a long transmissi-

on line

  1. Electric power is generated at power plants

  2. How is current transmitted to those parts?

Задание № 8 Прочитайте текст . Определите, какой из заголовков соот-

ветствует тексту.

Radio is a special kind of long-distance electrical communications. It makes pos-

sible to send different signals such as dots and dashes of the Morse code (radio-te-

legraphy), speech and music (radio telephony), images of objects and films (televi-

sion). Radio helps us to maintain contact with ships, with aircraft in flight or a spa-

cecraft. Radio helps us to detect an aircraft flying high above the clouds (radio lo-

cation, or radar) and measure the distance to it. Space stations photographed, on a

command transmitted by radio from the Earth, the hidden side of the Moon and sent its pictures back to the Earth.

Daily radio programmes include lectures, reports and concerts. Radio is a powerful means of spreading knowledge.

  1. Long-distance electrical communications c) The Morse Code

  2. Radio Programmes d) Radio Today

Задание № 9 Прочитайте текст .

Radio communication is the transfer of high-frequency energy from the transmit-

ter to the receiver without wires.

Radio is a device that transmits and receives signals and programs by electro-

magnetic waves. Since the process of radio communication includes transmission and reception of signals, the necessary components of radio are a transmitter and a

receiver.

The transmitter is a device that produces radio-frequency energy. The main parts of a transmitter are a high-frequency oscillator including an oscillatory circuit and

one or more amplifiers. In modern transmission electron tubes are used to amplify

currents and give greater transmitting range and better reception.

The receiver is a device that receives waves sent out by a transmitter. Radio rece-

iver demodulates these waves and they are heard as speech, music and signals.
