Узгодження часів (the sequence of tenses)
У англійському складнопідрядному реченні з підрядним додатковим (питання "що"?, "чого"? і т. д.) дотримуються правила узгодження часів в головному і підрядному реченнях. Ці правила зводяться до наступного:
1. Якщо дієслово-присудок головного речення стоїть у теперішньому або майбутньому часі, то дієслово-присудок додаткового речення може стояти у будь-якій часовій формі, потрібній за змістом, наприклад:
Не says you are right. - Він говорить, що ти правий.
Не will tell why he was not at school yesterday. - Він скаже, чому він не був в школі учора.
2. Якщо дієслово-присудок головного речення стоїть у минулому часі (зазвичай - в Past Simple), то і дієслово-присудок додаткового підрядного речення повинне стояти в одній з форм минулого часу, у тому числі - в майбутньому з точки зору того, що пройшло (Future- in- the- Past).
He said he would not go to school the next day. - Він сказав, що не піде в школу завтра.
При цьому для позначення дії, одночасної з дією, вираженою присудком головного
речення, вживається Past Continuous (у українській мові - теперішній час) або Past Simple.
Не told me he was preparing for his exam. - Він сказав мені, що готується до іспиту.
Для позначення дії, яка передує дії, вираженій присудком головного речення, зазвичай вживається Past Perfect. На українську мову дієслово-присудок підрядного речення в даному випадку перекладається дієсловом у минулому часі:
I didn't know he had left for Kyiv. - Я не знав, що він поїхав до Києва.
При вказівці певного часу (in 1980) попередній час виражається за допомогою Past Simple. Наприклад: I thought you were born in 1980.
Для вираження майбутнього часу з точки зору минулого часу вживається форма Future- in- the- Past , де допоміжне дієслово will змінюється на would, яке українською мовою перекладається майбутнім часом:
Не told me that he would meet me at the college. - Він сказав мені, що зустріне мене в коледжі.
