Географічні назви і артикль

З географічними назвами і з іменами власними, артикль, як правило, не вживається, окрім наступних випадків:

а) з назвами морів, річок, океанів, гірських хребтів, груп островів використовується означений артикль: the Pacific Ocean, the Black Sea, the Thames, the British Isles.

б) означений артикль вживається з декількома назвами країн, областей і міст (хоча зазвичай з цими типами назв артикль не вживається):

the Ukraine, the Crimea, the Caucasus, the Netherlands, the Hague, the Riviera, the Congo, the West Indies

в) означений артикль вживається з назвами країн типу:

the Russian Federation, the United States of America, the United Kingdom.

г) перед збірним ім'ям сім'ї: The Petrovs - Петрови

Запам'ятаєте: артикль не потрібний у сполученнях зі словами next і last типу:

next week, next year, last month, last Tuesday
