Зворот there is / there are вживається для виразу наявності (відсутності) якого-небудь предмету в певному місці або в певний час.

Present Simple

There is a picture on the wall. На стіні картина.

Is there a picture on the wall? На стіні є картина?

There are pictures on the wall. На стіні картини.

Are there pictures on the wall? На стіні є картини?

Past Simple

There was a picture on the wall На стіні була картина.

Was there a picture on the wall? На стіні була картина?

There were pictures on the wall. На стіні були картини.

Were there pictures on the wall? На стіні були картини?

Future Simple

There will be pictures on the wall. На стіні будуть картини.

Will there be pictures on the wall? На стіні будуть картини?

Вибір форми дієслова to be залежить від числа іменника, який іде відразу за ним:

There is a chair and two armchairs in the room.

There are two armchairs and a chair in the room.

Питальні речення із зворотом there is/there are будуються таким чином

Загальне питання: Is there anything in the bag? Will there be lessons tomorrow?

Спеціальне питання: What is there in the bag?

Розділове питання: There are some pupils in the classroom, aren't there?

Займенники little, much та few, many і займенникові вирази а little та а few (Quantitative pronouns)

Займенник little і займенниковий вираз а little вживаються перед незлічуваними іменниками, займенник few і займенниковий вираз а few – перед злічуваними:

Give me а little water, please.

There is little milk in the bottle.

I have a few friends in Minsk.

I've got only few pencils in the box.

Займенники few та little означать «мало», а займенникові вирази а few та а little - «небагато».

Much (багато) вживається з незлічуваними іменниками, many (багато) – перед злічуваними:
